The Governing Body wish to appoint an enthusiastic, inspirational and passionate headteacher who will work in partnership with a dedicated and caring staff, a supportive governing body and happy, motivated and receptive pupils. This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate.

Ysgol Maes Y Coed provides a curriculum to match the demands and needs of all its pupils whilst providing strong pastoral support to maximise each pupil’s potential.

In its most recent Estyn inspection (2023) it was noted that the school had excellent leadership, and teaching was a notable strength, and provided a high quality learning environment. Inspectors also recognised that the school had a strong sense of community in which staff and pupils thrive.

The successful applicant will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge and experience of working with pupils with a range of complex Additional Learning Needs including Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Possess the knowledge and expertise to understand the impact of challenging behaviours on a pupil’s learning and meet these needs effectively

Evidence successful working relationships with Health professionals and various external agencies to support the complex needs of many learners

Demonstrate a clear vision in maintaining and developing our school in partnership with the staff, governors, parents and the local authority

Promote the development of dynamic teamwork and collective responsibility across the whole school

Lead, manage and motivate staff and pupils

Continue to develop the school, building on strengths and maximising the teaching and learning opportunities

Demonstrate an excellent knowledge of Child Protection and Safeguarding practices and policies

Have a detailed working knowledge of Curriculum for Wales

Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the Additional Learning Needs Tribunal Wales Act and Code for Wales and implement duties and processes effectively

Be committed to improving pupil outcomes and focusing on teaching and learning

Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills

Understand the importance of the school at the heart of its community

Ensure the efficient and effective management of the budget and all resources within the school

Demonstrate a proven track record in school leadership, management and school improvement

The recruitment process for this post will be underpinned by rigorous safer recruitment assessment to ensure that children and young people are protected.

Applicants are required to be a serving headteacher or have NPQH before being shortlisted.

This post is subject to an Enhanced Check (Child and Adult list) from the Disclosure & Barring Service.

Shortlisting will take place on: 9 March 2026

Interviews: 18 March 2026

Potential candidates are welcome to visit the school on 12th and 13th March at 1pm for an informal tour of the school.
