Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within GMMH for an experienced member of staff to lead in the development and delivery of clinical skills training for co-occurring mental health, alcohol & drugs training.

This role is initially for 12 months to identify and replicate best practice across GMMH services in line with existing and emerging national guidance. Support will be provided by existing training teams and opportunities for career development will be on offer. Suited to those with experience managing projects, responsive to innovation and a strong ability to network, this role encourages autonomy and creativity.

A strong knowledge of co-occurring conditions and/or training needs analysis would be desirable but existing transferrable skills will be considered. Support around learning and development will be supported via experienced operational and clinical leaders within GMMH. Based remotely, or use of existing team spaces is available and there will be an expectation to travel around the organisation and have exceptional MS Teams and presentation skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support and add to the extension of MDDLS training activities to equivalent staffing areas (Inpatient and Community) across the GMMH footprint.

The post holder will link, liaise and initially work closely with other clinical trainers to ensure consistency of approach in line with GMMH Trust values is maintained as standard.

The post holder will be responsive to any training enquiries and share in regular team meetings in order to respond to local need efficiently around subject specific areas.

This post holder will also seek to understand a range of staff training needs from across the organisation and a training needs analysis will form the basis of developments made.

The post holder will also be responsible for supporting voices of Experts By Experience (EBE) to contribute, develop, coproduce and cofacilitate courses to staff working alongside people with COMHAD related needs.

As services develop the post holder will be expected to be responsive to changes in emerging drug trends, policy guidance, national guidance – all of which will be reflected in the requisite continual learning and evaluation of all courses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Leadership:

Support and contribute to the development of a trust wide COMHAD training strategy informed by GMMH policy documentation (in development).

To work autonomously, managing dates, being responsive to all enquiries and to utilise a range of network and meeting forums to promote, inform about training opportunities available to staff.

Shared responsibility for management and arranging training courses, evaluation, booking and being responsive to a range of diverse training needs.

To deliver with confidence best practice clinical interventions aimed at supporting staff in relation to COMHAD needs

To consult with Experts by Experience (EBE) colleagues on existing training and teaching plans and offers within the team, inclusive of affected family members groups.

Lead on the involvement of experts by experience in new training design, delivery and evaluation.

To recognise and respond to stigma in an appropriate, timely manner when delivering training to staff who work with people who use drugs and alcohol, alongside a mental health condition.

Clinical risk:

The post holder will work with colleagues of all disciplines to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in working with people with COMHAD related needs so that it becomes a core aspect of the work of all clinicians. Training will be delivered and developed in accordance with 2025 guidance (CoSUM/Delivery Framework) as well as Public Health England and NICE guidance.

Quality:

Conduct a GMMH training needs analysis in relation to COMHAD, to inform new course development alongside best available evidence, current guidance. This will be supported by NHSE training strategy standards and align with the training strategy for Manchester and wider GMMH strategies.

8. Relevant qualifications for training roles, PGCS, Education and Training for Adult Learners
9. A qualification in mental health nursing (RMN or part 13 of the NMC register), general nursing (RGN or part 12 or the NMC register), social work, occupational therapy, clinical psychology or counselling/psychotherapy). Or substantial experience in a related field Addiction Services, Teaching, Training Professional registration appropriate to own discipline ( NMC, HPC, BPS)
10. Post qualification experience in a dual diagnosis specialist role or similar (at Band 6 & above or equivalent) or Significant experience of working with people with co-morbid mental health and substance misuse problems

Desirable criteria

11. A qualification in a relevant area of practice eg dual diagnosis, substance misuse, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy
12. Experience of developing and leading on training needs analysis will be desirable, or a strong ability to project manage and demonstrate leadership skills in relation to a specific project.
13. Delivery of level 2 dual diagnosis training and/or Motivational Interviewing Knowledge and Understanding of the Addiction Provider Alliance (APA) Stigma Kills campaign. Knowledge of assessment and screening tools in relation to COMHAD.

14. Evidence of continuing professional development particularly in relation to the development of knowledge and skills for working with people with dual diagnosis.

The Trust mandates all post holders who require a DBS for their role to subscribe to the DBS Update Service. You will be required to enrol for this service for a fee of £16 per year and maintain registration throughout your employment with GMMH.
