Specialty Doctor – Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Department: Obstetrics and Gynaecology Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.
Base: Royal Infirmary, Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health. You may also be required to work at any NHS Lothian site, including St Johns Hospital, Livingston.

Entry criteria for a Specialty Doctor
* Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council (GMC).
* At least four years’ full‑time postgraduate training (or equivalent) of which at least two years should be in a specialty training programme or a specialty registrar locum appointment for training (LAT). Alternatively, equivalent training, experience or competencies, either in the UK or overseas.
Employment characteristics
* Full time – 10 positions.
* Fixed term – 2 years.
* Salary: Competitive and in line with NHS salary scales.
* Working hours: 40 hours per week (fixed term, part‑time). Standard week includes outpatient and inpatient activity and contributes to on‑call rota (middle grade 1:8).
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will perform general obstetrics and gynaecology clinical duties, including admission, delivery, post‑partum care, surgical interventions, and outpatient clinic management. The role also involves participation in the on‑call rota and multidisciplinary team meetings. The post is based at the RIE and may require working at other NHS Lothian sites as service demands arise.
Qualifications and experience
* GMC registration required.
* Desirable additional post‑graduate qualifications, e.g., MRCOG.
* Wide experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology, including obstetric emergencies, gynaecological surgery, and neonatal assessment.
