Job overview

Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust is a well known as a specialised childrens hospital in the centre of London. The Department is looking for suitable candidates for a Band 5 Clinical Physiologist posts.

The Department of Clinical Neurophysiology delivers daily outpatient clinics within the department but a high proportion of the work is carried out in the more challenging environments of the wards and Intensive Care Units. The Department also provide specialist services in EEG video telemetry and Intra-Operative Spinal Monitoring (IOM).

This is an ideal opportunity for a recently qualified Physiologist, who will be supported by a large and enthusiastic team and expected to perform and factually report routine diagnostic procedures on patients ranging from pre-term infants to adolescents, these are carried out in Department, wards and intensive care settings.


Main duties of the job

Many patients have complex neurological and clinical problems and have been referred from tertiary centres elsewhere. Regular in-house study and training sessions are mandatory for all staff, with opportunities to attend courses and meetings at both national and international level.

* Plan, perform, interpret, and provide factual reports of unsupervised neurophysiological investigations. These include:
* Video EEGs
* Sleep EEGs
* Prolonged recordings (for seizure detection and monitoring of therapeutic intervention)
* EEGs with drug administration
* Visual, Auditory and Somatosensory Evoked Potential
* Tests may be carried out in the department and in the more challenging environments of the wards e.g. ICUs. The postholder may be asked to assist in more complex procedures, training will be given in areas of need.
* To ensure accurate logging and filing of data from the neurophysiological investigations. To be responsible for its availability and integrity and to follow the regulations relating to the Data Protection Act.
* May participate, giving technical assistance in ongoing research and development studies, as directed by the Clinical Neurophysiology Professional Service Manager.
* Reporting faults or problems with the equipment used in any part of the service to the Professional Service Manager or Clinical Engineers.
* Ensure personal compliance with regards to mandatory, professional, and personal development according to service needs

* BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology or BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Neurophysiology) or equivalent specialist training

Experience/Knowledge

* Basic grounding in Clinical Neurophysiology
* Experience of performing clinical EEG during work placements
* Interest in Epilepsy syndromes and other paroxysmal events
* Experience of working with children


Skills/Abilities

* To perform range of neurophysiological tests
* To work to clear protocols
* To communicate with staff within the Multidisciplinary team
* To communicate well with children, their families and/or carers sometimes in distressing /emotional situations
* Work well in a team
* Flexible approach to work.
* Participation in weekend and Bank Holiday (daytime) on-call rota
