Offer description

The post holder will act as an experienced specialist State Registered Biomedical Scientist to provide a continuous, comprehensive Cellular Pathology service as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment.

To undertake routine and advanced preparatory and interpretive techniques including Immunohistochemistry and Research projects.

To perform technical duties as required in Cellular Pathology to necessary standards, within the guidelines of Health and Safety regulations, supporting the provision of a diagnostic service to patients.

The post holder is a Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist performing routine and specialist tasks unsupervised when necessary, directed by senior Biomedical Scientists according to operational requirements.

The post holder will also be expected to work independently.

The post holder will maintain personal and professional development and competency to meet the changing demands of the job, participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff development and training.

To supervise newly qualified BMS staff, trainees and biomedical support workers.


Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Cellular Pathology Department at Swansea Bay University Health Board as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist / Trainee BMS.

The department is continually developing services and, as a BMS, you would be at the forefront of developments such as the implementation of Molecular Pathology Services and the all-Wales Digital Pathology Programme.

In addition to experienced Biomedical Scientists, applications are invited from graduates (or students who are about to graduate) with an accredited IBMS degree in Biomedical Science or from students who are about to graduate from a healthcare science practitioner training programme (PTP) degree.

Trainee Biomedical Scientists will be appointed in the absence of any appropriately qualified candidates.

The Cellular Pathology Department has an excellent record in achieving HCPC registration for Trainee Biomedical Science graduates who have not already achieved this.

We offer a wide range of development opportunities and CPD activities, and are currently supporting a number of staff through MSc courses.

The department is fully UKAS accredited under ISO 15189 standards and is well equipped with state of the art equipment.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Degree in Biomedical Science. IBMS Specialist Portfolio in histology or equivalent knowledge and experience.
* Worked in Cellular Pathology laboratory environment.


Skills

* Proven ability to work independently.
* Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.


Knowledge / Experience

* In depth experience and wide understanding and practice of Cellular Pathology techniques. Good Knowledge of current professional issues.
* Understanding of complex specialist laboratory techniques.
