This is an opportunity to work in an internationally respected unit at the forefront of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. This post would be suitable for both UK and international senior surgical trainees, wishing to advance their skills in oncoplastic breast surgery. The successful applicant will be working at senior trainee level (equivalent to ST6). Successful applicants need to have full GMC registration. MRCS or FRCS examinations are not a prerequisite for applicants, but, an equivalent level of surgical training and education is expected. Sound basic knowledge in breast surgical oncology and/or breast reconstruction would be desirable, and a good level of knowledge and clinical skills in assessment and management of breast disease is essential. Main duties of the job The weekly job plan, will be flexible from week to week, with allocated dedicated time in operating theatre and reconstruction clinics working with the entire team. However, incorporated within the job plan, is a compulsory service commitment, including new referral clinics, MDTs and results clinics. It is expected that the successful candidate contributes towards the day to day running of the breast unit. About us The Breast Services activities are concentrated in two main areas: the symptomatic service for GP referred patients and the NHS Breast Screening Programme. The breast surgery service within Breast Services provides standard diagnostic and therapeutic surgery, as well as a comprehensive reconstructive surgery service (working closely with the Plastic Surgeons). The Breast Service is multidisciplinary and includes, under a single management team, surgeons, radiologists, specialist nurses (breast care nurses and nurse practitioners), ACPs, diagnostic radiographers and administrative/clerical staff. The Breast Services budget includes funding for all breast inpatient and outpatient activity and breast diagnostic support. We have long established and frequently reviewed clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Job responsibilities The combined Plastic and Breast Surgery service is currently carried out by Mr Douglas Macmillan, Mr Tuabin Rasheed, Miss Ellie Gutteridge, Miss Lisa Whisker, Mr Hazem Khout, Miss S. Nadia Gilani, Miss Susanna Polotto, Miss Razia Bano (Locum), Ms A Mumtaz (locum), Mr Stephen McCulley, Ms Anna Raurell, Miss Hulla Mohammed and Mr Sarmad Tamimy (plastics HOS). A joint breast reconstruction clinic is held each week at which both the breast surgeon and plastic surgeons are present. Joint consultant operating lists also take place on a weekly basis. Since its inception, the unit has been accredited for a TIG, oncoplastic breast surgical fellowship (a centrally funded and supernumerary post) by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Additionally there are local breast/general and plastics surgical trainees and fellows in the team. Training and qualifications Essential • GMC • MRCS and / or FRCS or equivalent international surgical degree / qualification Desirable • MD or PhD thesis in breast related topic Experience Essential • At least 2-3 years clinical experience in breast surgery and / or reconstructive breast surgery • Basic skills in oncological breast surgery • Evidence of commitment to breast surgery Desirable • Experience of multi-disciplinary working and evidence of participation in such a team. Teaching, Audit and Research Essential • Evidence of participation in Clinical audit • Able to teach and support junior and allied staff effectively. Desirable • GCP certification. • Experience recruiting to research trials.
