Subject to formal establishment, a vacancy will arise for a Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) to serve as 9 Air Experience Flight (9 AEF) Flight Commander at RAF Leeming on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 24 April 2026. 6 FTS is the largest and most diverse military flying training school in the country. From its HQ at RAF Cranwell, the school manages a broad range of flying tasks, from Elementary Flying Training on University Air Squadrons to the provision of Air Experience Flying (AEF) for RAFAC. The successful applicant run No.9 Air Experience Flight delivering the cadet flying task on the Grob Tutor TMk1. You will also deliver air and ground instruction for ab-initio aircrew as well as conversion and currency training for experienced aircrew on No.9 AEF. Additionally, you will be working as a member of a small team and be required to undertake a range of secondary duties associated with the supervision of flying and the management of the Squadron. Furthermore, in addition to your duties with the UAS, you will be required to carry out those duties associated with a commissioned officer of your rank. Specifically, you will be required to: Provide air experience flying for cadets of the Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force (RAF); and flying experience, including elementary flying instruction, for undergraduate members of UAS. Recruit and supervise a cadre of AEF volunteer pilots. Conduct instructional and standardisation sorties for UAS and AEF staff. Convert to the Tutor (Grob 115E) aircraft. Prior to taking up your post, you may be required to attend 115 Sqn, at RAF Wittering, for QFI conversion and refresher training and, during your employment, you will be required to attend Standards Flight (RAF Wittering) annually for routine flying standardisation. Undergo training and maintain currency for the following : Force Protection Individual Readiness Training, RAF Fitness Test, Flying Supervisors Course; Human Factors / Error Management; Aviation Medicine Training Wing; Defence Train the Trainer; and, if required, attend the Short Interview Technique Course. Be available to attend training evenings during university term times if required by OC UAS. Assist with recruiting new UAS students at the start of each university year, visiting the freshers’ fairs of its affiliated universities and conducting interviews, if required by the OC UAS. Assist in the mentoring and delivery of leadership trg to UAS students. The current working week is Monday to Friday. However, applicants should be aware of potential requirement to work 5 days out of every 7, including weekend flying.
