Job responsibilities
* Competently perform a full range of basic lung function tests on adults and paediatric out‑patients and in‑patients.
* Competently analyse basic lung function tests on adults and paediatric patients.
* Review and prioritise web ICE requests for lung function tests.
* Effectively, promptly and professionally respond to emergency situations maintaining control and requesting assistance as necessary.
* Participate in training for ongoing professional development.
* Assist with the efficient running of the technical service by prioritising the daily workload where appropriate.
* Identify equipment faults and resolve fault issues by reporting them in a timely manner to the lead specialist clinical physiologist.
* Assist in the day‑to‑day running of the area in which they are working; ensuring all equipment is operational, stock levels are maintained and that equipment and non‑disposable items are cleaned according to departmental policies and procedures.
* Ensure economical use of supplies.
* Remain up‑to‑date with latest trends in clinical physiology and translate these into practice.
* Participate in the in‑house training and technical competency log within the department.
* Ensure all patients receive appropriate and individualised care.
* Administrative responsibilities: ensure that all data entered onto any databases are performed in a timely and accurate manner and that statistical records and audits are produced when required.
* Management and leadership responsibilities: ensure a high standard of patient care is delivered and agreed protocols and policies are adhered to; assist senior staff in ensuring the effective operation of the department on a day‑to‑day basis.
* Clinical supervision of respiratory physiologist staff that are less skilled.
* Professional responsibilities: conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times; demonstrate good morale with open communication between all levels of staff and disciplines.
* Contribute to and actively participate in the correct reporting and handling of incidents and accidents.
* Education and development responsibilities: possess or gain accreditation with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP); work in accordance with standards set by the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP) and the RCCP.
* Familiar with the use of computerised systems integral to the running of the department.
* Actively participate and commit to maintaining own personal professional development, identifying educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with the lead specialist clinical physiologist.
* Ensure that own mandatory training is up‑to‑date.
* Attend and contribute to departmental teaching sessions in Respiratory Medicine.
* Support and deliver spirometry training courses.
* Assist the Lead Physiologist with strategic direction to an ongoing and successful research programme.
* Assist in ensuring accreditation compliance for Respiratory Physiology Services.
* Managing resources responsibilities: ensure all equipment used is maintained in a good, clean and safe order at all times and report any loss or defect to the lead specialist clinical physiologist; ensure the safe and proper use of expensive diagnostic equipment.
* Support the development of the Respiratory and Sleep physiology apprentices.
* Support local training of junior colleagues.
* Ensure own development needs are identified and mandatory training compliance is maintained.

Qualifications
* Undergraduate degree in clinical physiology or Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) qualification or completion of apprenticeship program Level 6 or equivalent experience (and willingness to complete L6 course).
* Basic Life Support (BLS).
* ARTP Spirometry Certificate.
* ARTP overnight oximetry certificate.
* Relevant scientific degree/qualification recognised by RCCP/AHCS.
* PTP equivalence.
