Study Assistant (Non-Medical Helper)

Variable Hours; Grade 5, spine point F19, £15.55 per hour + £1.88 holiday rate per hour

Who we're looking for:

The Disability & Inclusion Advice Service (DIAS) is looking to appoint a bank of Study Assistants (Non-Medical Helpers) to join our existing team. You will provide an essential support service to students within the University. Sitting within the Student Wellbeing & Support team, you will provide practical study support to students who have been identified with disabilities, medical and mental health conditions and formally diagnosed specific learning difficulties (SPLDs), such as dyslexia and dyspraxia, to help them achieve their full potential whilst at university. You will provide vital support services to students both within the University and offsite when necessary. Your role will encompass assisting students across various programmes offered by the University, including Criminology, Psychology, Outdoor Adventure Education, and Sport programmes. While not a requirement, we also encourage applications from individuals who are comfortable and interested in supporting students in Outdoor Adventure Education and Sport programmes.

You will need to be flexible and have the availability to work at times led by student timetables, have excellent communication and listening skills, and demonstrate a reliable and supportive attitude. Previous experience of supporting or working with students or people with mental health difficulties and/or autism would be desirable but not essential.

What you'd be doing:

This support may include a variety of roles including (although not limited to):

· Note taking

· Acting as a reader

· Transcription

· Enabling – supporting students with mobility issues

· Working with technology to make course materials accessible

· Photocopying, enlarging texts

· Study support

You will also play an important role in supporting the liaison between the individual, the Student Wellbeing and Support team, various Academic staff and other members of the University.

You'll need to enjoy:

· Working with people

· Building rapport with colleagues/students (in person, over the phone or by email)

· Providing excellent customer service

· Engaging with Assistive Technology and the University's digital learning environments and systems

· Being part of a team

Where you'll work:

In this role, you'll be based in the Disability & Inclusion Advice Service (DIAS) within the wider Student Wellbeing and Support team, on our green campus in the north of Plymouth.

In order to be successful in this role, you will be required to work on site. Although, there may be some remote work involved (such as typing up notes or taking notes in virtual sessions).
