About the Role
An exciting opportunity is available for a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker post in the Community Respiratory Team of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will work alongside the overall clinical team supporting with the Pulmonary Rehabilitation, admission avoidance and assisted discharge, and diagnostic spirometry pathways.

Job Responsibilities
To provide a high standard of care to patients working in accordance with the trust and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
To communicate daily with the Senior Respiratory Team members ensuring accurate and effective workload instructions are disseminated and report back information about patients.
To provide support and advice to patients and carers under the direction of the allocating senior team member and contribute to the co‑ordination of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme when required.
The post holder will be required to assist in providing interventions and/or treatment for patients supported by the respiratory services. This will include undertaking tasks to support biomedical investigations such as obtaining clinic samples and a range of procedures, including:
* Patient height and weight measurements.
* Blood pressure and oxygen saturation recordings.
* Demonstrating and teaching inhaler device techniques to patients in the clinic environment.
* Collecting sputum samples as requested by Senior Respiratory Team members for the purpose of investigation.
* Preparing and maintaining the clinical environment, including the monitoring and upkeep of stock levels.
* Decontaminating equipment used following appropriate National Strategy.
* Raising awareness of health promotion issues, e.g. smoking cessation.
* Attending and participating in team/professional meetings as indicated by the service and keeping up to date with current professional issues relevant to practice.
* Maintaining accurate, timely and legible records appropriate to the level of practice.
* Undertaking general office and administration duties as required by the service.
* Working with the Respiratory Team to maintain high standards of care, following Trust policies and procedures.
* Being involved in health promotion activities, e.g. attendance at health events.
* Promoting the rights of and recognising and supporting the diversity of patients.
* Undertaking other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the relevant line manager.
* Minimising the Trust’s environmental impact wherever possible, including recycling, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use, reducing paper waste, minimising printing/copying, reducing water usage, reporting faults and heating/cooling concerns promptly and minimising travel, and considering the environmental impact of purchases when ordering supplies or equipment.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications / Training
* NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
* Respiratory experience; understanding of condition, limitations, deteriorating patients, management, etc.
Essential Experience
* Dealing with members of the public; working in a clinic/home environment.
* Experience in a Health/Social care setting.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
* Demonstrate an interest in respiratory care.
* Understand the role of the Health Care Support worker.
* Practice safely and confidently, with awareness of health and safety issues in the home/workplace.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work as part of a team and organise own workload.
* Ability to reflect on and understand the scope and limitations of their role and know when to raise concerns to a senior member of staff for support or action.
* Attendance at relevant study days to maintain up‑to‑date and safe practice along with continued personal development.
Desirable
* Awareness of the needs of ethnic minority clients and carers.
* Experience of primary care setting.
* Computer skills an advantage.
