Job overview

This is a substantive, full-time position is for a highly motivated Band 6 Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist to join our dynamic team based at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, the first Academic Health Science Centre in the UK.

This rotational post includes opportunities to develop skills and expertise in the upper and lower quadrants, complex patients, hand therapy and pelvic health.

You will be joining a large team of band 5, 6 and 7 therapists which includes a diverse mix of staff including; rotational physiotherapists, specialist hand therapy occupational therapists, specialist pelvic health physiotherapists and therapy assistants and technicians. At Imperial we have a strong links with research and are fortunate to have the lead clinical academic for therapies nested within the department.

We have a novel way of developing staff, utilising an innovative new patient model within clinical teams, each led by our Clinical specialist practitioners. Complex new patients are assessed in a specific clinic with time allocated for reflection, integration of evidence based care, peer learning and so incorporating CPD into daily practice.


Main duties of the job

* To provide a high standard physiotherapy service to patients in all service areas
* To acquire and demonstrate knowledge of relevant pathologies, conditions, normal values relating to the specialist area of physiotherapy.
* To be responsible for own caseload and be responsible within a defined area of the service and to undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
* To supervise and contribute to the training and development of therapy support workers, band 5 physiotherapists and students.
* To undertake service development projects to further own and team's clinical practice within each area.
* To make recommendations for service development, with active involvement in the implementation of changes to practice or service protocols.
* To participate in one of the out of hours weekend working and overnight respiratory on-call rota (specific rota details are held locally within departments). dependant on speciality area
* Paediatrics only: The job holder will help to provide a 7 day 24 hour paediatric inpatient service when completing the acute inpatient rotation (specific rota details are held locally within departments).

Person specification


Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
* Degree (or equivalent) in Physiotherapy
* State registration with the Health Professions Council
* Evidence of CPD through maintenance of a portfolio.
* Demonstrate learning of personal effectiveness and first line leadership from experience and from both formal and informal CPD activity.
Desirable criteria
* Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
* Membership of CSP special interest groups relevant to speciality


Experience

Essential criteria
* Recent substantial and sustained experience in relevant physiotherapy specialities and clinical settings
* Experience of working as part of a physiotherapy and multidisciplinary team
* To have participated in service development projects.
* Experience of clinical education of staff, students or assistants.
* Experience of supervision of students/ physiotherapy assistants, with development of basic supervision skills.
* Demonstrate an understanding of the use of evidence based practice in speciality
* Experience of on-call and weekend working in an acute hospital
* To have undertaken audit and/or research, either within area of physiotherapy speciality or as part of the MDT
Desirable criteria
* Previous experience in the NHS as a qualified physiotherapist
* Previous senior physiotherapist experience in relevant post
* Involvement with Clinical Governance issues and an understanding of their relation to patient care
* Experience of on-call and weekend working in an acute hospital


Skills

Essential criteria
* Able to apply a range and depth of knowledge to this specialist area.
* Able to use knowledge of a range of treatment approaches in the specialist area.
* Competent IT skills.
* Be fluent in written and spoken English.
Desirable criteria
* Evidence of CPD relevant to role and specialist area.
* Well-developed abilities for communication and consensus building skills, to speak to groups.
