Job Summary

* Provide speech and language therapy assessment and intervention to adolescents and young adults with a range of speech, language & communication needs (SLCN) possibly in the context of other neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions.
* Develop skills within an identified specialist area.
* Implement evidence‑based models of care and intervention approaches focused on outcomes and impact.
* Provide training to parents, education staff and other professionals as required.
* Collaborate seamlessly as an integral member of the multi‑disciplinary team, contributing to service development projects where applicable.


Main Duties / Key Result Areas


Clinical

* Deliver comprehensive speech & language therapy services to identified educational settings, following a universal, targeted and specialist model of delivery, with supervision and support.
* Undertake specialist assessment and intervention on a referral basis using a range of appropriate assessment tools to inform clinical decision‑making.
* Provide dysphagia assessment and intervention within your scope of practice, accessing support and supervision for complex cases.
* Provide differential diagnosis and recommend a clear, time‑limited, evidence‑based management plan.
* Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency teams to contribute to care planning meetings, joint assessments, goal setting and reviews where appropriate.
* Use a range of therapy approaches relevant to the client group.
* Deliver training to parents when appropriate.
* Support communication skill development and provide intervention to support this.
* Collaborate with teams to ensure effective, streamlined support.
* Ensure appropriate communication of EHCP / IEP targets, set and reviewed.
* Utilise alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) tools, both low and high tech.
* Account for factors contributing to challenging behaviour in assessment and intervention planning.
* Support the implementation of community‑based grant‑funded projects where appropriate.
* Signpost and refer clients to appropriate services based on individual need.
* Secure parent/carer consent prior to assessment or intervention, complying with professional guidelines.
* Follow the Mental Capacity Act (2005) regarding consent, Best Interest Decisions and record them clearly.
* Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of assessment, treatment, review and discharge in line with legal and organisational requirements.
* Monitor intervention effectiveness through goal setting, audit, clinical outcome measurement and service evaluation.
* Maintain confidential notes in line with HCPC regulations.


Professional

* Be an integral member of the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Use communication, interpersonal and teaching skills to educate diverse and multicultural community members, including those with communication difficulties.
* Translate complex information for staff, parents and carers in one‑to‑one and group settings.
* Manage own workload, including referrals and discharges, and provide activity reports as requested.
* Participate in training of student speech and language therapists, planning timetables, providing supervision, feedback and assessment.
* Supervise and support speech & language therapy assistants or junior therapists as appropriate.
* Maintain effective communication with the line manager regarding all aspects of the post.
* Ensure safe practice through caseload management, accessing supervision when required.
* Carry out risk assessment and report critical incidents as per policy.
* Promote clinical excellence through evidence‑based practice and contribution to standards, policies and guidelines.
* Seek new information and innovative practices (e.g., tele‑health, specific clinical approaches).
* Complete CPD, supervision and mandatory training, including monthly peer support.
* Comply with professional codes of practice, guidelines and organisational policies.
* Promote effective team working and communication of complex client information.
* Apply equality and diversity principles to support children, young people and families.
* Respect individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity and provide a sensitive service.
* Reflect on personal cultural beliefs and their influence when working with diverse families.


General

* Keep electronic records of all student contacts per organisational standards.
* Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with GDPR, Organisational Privacy Policy and HCPC standards.
* Ensure flexible service delivery, including cover arrangements during absences.
* Use basic Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
* Promote equal opportunities and ensure no discriminatory treatment on protected grounds.
* Follow safeguarding procedures and take an active approach to protect students and families.
* Maintain professional registration with the HCPC.
* Work within HCPC professional code of practice and professional body guidelines, staying within scope of practice.
* Adhere to infection control policy, following strict hand hygiene and prevention of healthcare‑associated infections.
* Keep infection control knowledge and skills updated through mandatory training.
* Carry out any additional duties reasonably required for the post.


Working Hours & Conditions

Flexible basis of 1–2 days per week, exact days negotiable. Start date flexible; notice period to be discussed.
