For August 2023 The Glasgow Academy Music Department is seeking to appoint a highlymotivated Pipe Band Drumming tutor, who will also be responsible for the leadership ofthe Academy’s Pipe Band. This position forms an exciting opportunity for the rightcandidate to develop the Academy’s drumming provision.
Currently, instrumental and vocal tutors at The Glasgow Academy are self-employed;however, from August 2023 we are looking to appoint a part-time drumming tutor andpart-time piping tutor, with the drumming tutor also being responsible for leading thePipe Band. These two posts will be part of the Music Department staffing and will be line-managed by the Director of Music, which is more in line with other independent schools inScotland.
The School
The Glasgow Academy is an ambitious, warm, welcoming, thriving and forward-thinkingfully co-educational HMC independent day school of around 1600 pupils aged 3-18. It ishighly popular, growing in a planned way over the last 14 years. It consists of the SeniorSchool, of just over 760 pupils of 11-18 years of age, and a Preparatory School (whichhas three sites and around 800 children, counting all those in Nursery/Kindergarten). Theschool gains excellent SQA exam results, and raising academic results further is thecentral target of its School Improvement Plan. Our Higher pass rate of 99% was the bestamongst West Scotland independent schools in 2019 and a record 48 Academy pupilsachieved 5 or more A grades. The school's latest £15 million new building won Best Building in Scotland 2016, the UK'srichest architectural prize. The school has invested around £27 million in its facilities overthe last decade or so and continues to invest heavily and strategically.
The Role
At present, drumming is offered from Prep 3 upwards (20/30 minute lessons, usually at afixed point in the week) in the Preparatory School (N/KG to Prep 7) where there is also aJunior Drum Corps which rehearses one lunchtime a week. This acts as a feeder for thePipe Band when individuals reach the required standard. Lessons for the senior pupils areusually 40 minutes and rotate from week to week in order to avoid missing the samesubject two weeks in a row.
The Pipe Band is often requested to perform outside before numerous events at TGAthroughout the academic year, including a number of events put on by our CommunityAssociation (PTA). The Director of the Pipe Band would be expected to ensure bandmembers are rehearsed and notified of any events in good time. Applicants should haveprevious experience in the delivery of drumming tuition and will be required to be amember of Disclosure Scotland's PVG scheme for children.
The Person
The successful candidate will be expected to deliver pipe band drumming tuition to pupilsacross all levels and stages. As Director of the Pipe Band, you will be required to run andorganise weekly Pipe Band rehearsals with the pupils and piping/drumming instructors, aswell as the necessary administration for any concerts and competitions. Some supportwith this will be available from the department’s Music Administrator.

The Appointment
Hours of Work
It is expected that the Director of the pipe band and drumming tutor will timetable theirlessons between 8.30am and 3.55pm across 3 days per week in term time, attending thedepartmental meeting (usually on a Wednesday afternoon, but to be confirmed for nextacademic year).
Remuneration
Salary is £27,900 per annum (pro rata) paid in 12 equal monthly instalments.
