Offer description

Assistant Ranger - Morpeth Summary Cragside is one of the National Trust’s flagship properties and one of the busiest cultural attractions in the North East, welcoming more than 250,000 visitors each year. Set within a dramatic and extensive Grade I registered historic landscape, this is a role for someone who enjoys practical, hands on work, and takes pride in helping visitors enjoy an exceptional experience. As Assistant Recreation Ranger working outdoors in all weather conditions, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the estate is always safe, welcoming, and beautifully presented. Please note that this role is not a traditional wildlife or habitat led conservation assistant ranger post. At Cragside, our primary focus is landscape presentation, operational readiness, and delivering excellent visitor access and enjoyment. The working days for this role are Sunday to Thursday, including bank holidays. Flexibility of working patterns to meet business needs may be required. For this role, you’ll need to complete our online assessment instead of using a C.V. or online application form. This will help us understand more about your strengths and give you more information on the role. What it's like to work here Cragside is an inspiring place to work - steeped in innovation, rich in history, and surrounded by striking scenery. The hilly terrain, exposed conditions, and constantly changing weather make this a physically demanding role, but also incredibly rewarding. You’ll join a small, supportive Ranger team led by the Area Ranger, working closely with colleagues across the estate, especially those in facilities, forestry, gardens, and visitor experience to ensure the site is ready to open each day. The work is varied, fast paced, and broad in scope: no two days look the same, and teamwork underpins everything we do. What you'll be doing Your day may involve practical maintenance such as vegetation clearance, strimming, mowing, small path repairs, and ensuring car parks are neat and welcoming. You’ll operate a range of machinery and equipment confidently and safely, and you’ll also drive site vehicles including pickups, UTVs, and ride on machines as part of your daily work. Each morning, you’ll help open the estate by unlocking buildings, barriers, and access points, before supporting the flow of vehicles and visitors during busy periods. Safety is a constant priority, and you’ll assist with carrying out critical inspections across the site while also responding to incidents such as first aid incidents, or lost persons. Working alongside volunteers will be a regular part of your week as well as supporting the work of the wider team. While you’ll contribute to conservation related work where it aligns with operational needs, your primary focus will remain on presentation, access, and the overall visitor experience. You’ll be required to be First Aid At Work qualified and have a full driving license. Who we're looking for able to demonstrate practical experience in land, conservation and access management to level 2 or have 6 months vocational experience willing to work outside in all weathers and deliver tasks when the weather conditions aren’t ideal comfortable working in a flexible and adaptable way able to work alone or under direction, and as part of a team positive with an approachable attitude happy and willing to learn new things enjoy the work you do and happy to share this with others The package The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too. Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18) Tax free childcare scheme Rental deposit loan scheme Season ticket loan Perks at work discounts i.e. gym memberships, shopping discount codes, cinema discounts Holiday allowance up to 32 days relating to length of service, plus holiday purchase scheme, subject to meeting minimum criteria Flexible working whenever possible Employee assistance programme Free parking at most locations Independent financial advice Click here to find out more about the benefits we offer to support you
