Job summary

Do you have the drive and ambition to support changing the way ambulance services respond to patients? Do you have significant experience working as a Paramedic, are you innovative, and passionate about developing the Paramedic profession?

Your role as the Deputy Chief Paramedic Officer will be responsible for promoting clinical excellence at all levels of the organisation, working across multi-disciplinary teams.

Day to day, your job will be to ensure that the Paramedic profession continues to develop using the College of Paramedics' career framework and advanced practice agenda.

You will need to be able to work across the four pillars of professional practice as well as developing workforce plans that are fit for the future.

South East Coast Ambulance is transforming the way we deliver services to our patients. We are in year two of our five-year clinically led strategy. This role will play an instrumental part in the move to how we respond to and change our service.

We need someone who embodies our Trust values, understands the issues the wider NHS is facing, and can influence positive changes for both our patients and our staff.

Main duties of the job

1. Provide responsive and effective leadership, advice, and support to operational teams, heads of service, and senior colleagues on a wide range of business and workforce planning matters relating to clinical practice. Be accountable for the safe, high-quality delivery of clinical care.
2. Represent the Trust across the wider health and care system and sector, effectively networking with external stakeholders to contribute to system-wide strategic planning and implementation. Play a key role in system-based multidisciplinary clinical leadership teams across the Trust's geographical area.

Person Specification


Qualifications (Essential)

* HCPC registered and practicing paramedic
* Master's Degree in relevant field or substantial equivalent experience
* PhD/Doctorate in a relevant subject (or on a programme to achieve this) or equivalent substantial experience
* Evidence of significant post-registration specialist education and development professionally and/or managerial


Knowledge (Essential)

* Expert knowledge in one or more of the pillars of professional practice
* Proven senior leadership experience in relevant clinical environments
* In-depth understanding of the political, policy, and financial context of Trust operations


Experience (Essential)

* Extensive post-registration experience with senior leadership in complex environments
* Achievement in influencing colleagues to meet targets and performance standards
* Experience across the four pillars of paramedic practice
* Ability to challenge across boundaries
* Experience in managing change through redesign


Skills (Essential)

* Ability to translate strategic goals into operational plans
* Knowledge of regulatory frameworks
* Motivational leadership skills
* Strategic thinking and system approach
* Data interpretation and policy development


Personal Qualities (Essential)

* Understanding of NHS leadership framework
* Strong interpersonal skills and credibility
