Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Camunda Architect to lead the design, architecture, and implementation of enterprise-grade workflow and process orchestration solutions.
This role is responsible for defining architecture standards, guiding engineering teams, and ensuring scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable process automation solutions using Camunda, with a strong preference for Camunda 8.
The successful candidate will act as the technical authority for workflow orchestration and will work closely with stakeholders, solution architects, developers, and DevOps teams to deliver high-impact automation solutions aligned to business and engineering objectives.
Candidates with strong Camunda 7 experience may also be considered, provided they can clearly demonstrate an understanding of:
* the differences between Camunda 7 and Camunda 8
* the trade-offs between the two platforms
* when each is most appropriate
* readiness to work in a Camunda 8-led environment
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Solution Design
* Define and own the end-to-end architecture for Camunda-based workflow and process orchestration solutions
* Lead the design of scalable, resilient, and cloud-native workflow architectures using Camunda / Zeebe
* Establish architecture standards and best practices for:
o BPMN
o DMN
o workflow orchestration
o process governance
o versioning and lifecycle management
* Translate complex business processes into robust and maintainable technical solutions
Platform, Integration & Engineering
* Architect integrations with microservices, APIs, and event/messaging platforms
* Design for scalability, fault tolerance, performance, and operational resilience
* Guide deployment strategy across Camunda SaaS and self-managed models
* Collaborate with engineering and DevOps teams on:
o CI/CD pipelines
o containerised deployments
o Kubernetes-based environments
o observability and platform monitoring
Technical Leadership
* Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance across engineering teams and delivery squads
* Mentor engineers and support the uplift of workflow orchestration capability across the organisation
* Evaluate tools, patterns, and frameworks to improve process automation capability and architectural maturity
Required Skills & Experience
Essential
* Strong experience designing and implementing solutions using Camunda, ideally Camunda 8 / Zeebe
* Camunda 8 Certification strongly preferred
* Deep understanding of:
o BPMN 2.0
o DMN
o workflow orchestration patterns
* Strong software architecture and system design experience
* Strong background in:
o microservices architecture
o event-driven systems
o distributed systems
* Strong backend engineering experience using Java / Spring Boot or equivalent
* Experience working with:
o REST APIs
o Kafka / RabbitMQ / messaging systems
o Docker
o Kubernetes
o cloud-native deployments
* Strong understanding of security, scalability, resilience, and reliability principles
* Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
* Ability to balance technical architecture with practical business and delivery outcomes
Preferred / Desirable
* Experience with both Camunda 7 and Camunda 8
* Experience with Camunda SaaS and self-managed deployments at scale
* Exposure to cloud platforms such as:
o AWS
o Azure
o GCP
* Experience with observability tooling such as:
o Prometheus
o Grafana
o OpenTelemetry
* Experience with:
o enterprise integration patterns
o API management
o workflow/task UI customisation
* Experience in regulated industries such as:
o Banking
o Insurance
o Healthcare
