About us

The Department of Anaesthesia at Homerton Hospital developed as a satellite service from the Department of Anaesthesia at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1986. Over the years it has evolved and is now an independent department with a dynamic, young team of dedicated anaesthetists within the SWNS directorate. Good links with the Barts Health NHS Trust are maintained, with some consultants working across sites. We are the first department in the UK to gain service accreditation under the Royal College of Anaesthetists ACSA scheme in August 2014, 2018 and 2023.

The department is situated in new purpose-built accommodation, which is conveniently part of the main theatre complex and provides a large seminar room for departmental presentations, meetings and with workstations for trainees. There is office space for consultants, with dedicated PC access fully networked to the hospital IT system. There is a PowerPoint data projection system, and overhead projection facilities. There is also a frequently updated selection of textbooks. The department has full-time secretarial support.

Job responsibilities

This is a whole time 10 PA (with an optional extra 2 PA) substantive post for a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia.

The post holder will be expected to cover theatre lists independently as per agreed job plan. Occasionally the specialty doctor may be called upon to partake in a 1:8 on call on the senior obstetric on call rota. The mutually agreed job plan will reflect the flexible nature of the role and can be expected to evolve and change over time.

In time and following satisfactory review by the Clinical Lead, the post holder may be invited to support the on call non-resident general consultant on call rota overnight. In such instances, the post holder will be supervised by a consultant anaesthetist locally or distantly while on call on a case-by-case basis.

The timetabled duties of the job will evolve over time to meet the needs of the department, especially with 7 day working delivery; accordingly the post holder is expected to accept flexibility to changed program activities following mutual discussion.

The department will consider support on an individual basis for any suitably experienced appointee who wishes to pursue the PMETB Article 14 route to specialist registration, including educational supervision and career guidance.

Participation in formal educational sessions, clinical governance, and quality improvement activity will be encouraged. The post holder will be encouraged to undertake training as clinical and educational supervisors, to participate formally in teaching trainees and medical students.

Applicants must be able to work independently and unsupervised. Applicants must have full registration with the GMC and a licence to practice. The appointment will be made under the terms of the 2021 SAS contract.
