Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.
DJJ is currently seeking a Special Agent Investigator. This role will protect the department and provide public safety by conducting investigations related to criminal and gang related incidents. Facilitates the delivery of gang program training to DJJ personnel and state and local agencies. Provides coordination and technical assistance related to DJJ gang training and programming to gang specialists and other staff in the community and the institutions.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited:
1. Serve as direct liaison to Bon Air JCC and works directly with other Regional Special Agents investigating criminal incidents at Bon Air JCC.
2. Assist in the process of gang, potential gang member observation process.
3. Participate in the process of gang member validation.
4. Provide accurate entries regarding gang and gang member information into the department’s Gang Management System and NCIC/VCIN as required by the Code of Virginia.
5. Assists in the design, development and delivery of gang programs in response to the needs of department employee groups, other state agencies and the general public.
6. Serves as liaison to federal, state and local law enforcement and governmental agencies.
7. Ability to design, develop and facilitate gang training programs.
8. Ability to maintain highly developed interpersonal skills and provide technical assistance in person and by telephone.
Must be able to respond to Bon Air JCC within one (1) hour. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications
9. Considerable knowledge of criminal/juvenile laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
10. Working knowledge of gang intervention/prevention programs; agency policies and procedures; methods and techniques of criminal / gang investigations and of information gathering techniques.
11. Demonstrated ability to gather and analyze information; to interpret and apply laws; to compile information, appraise information as evidence, conduct investigations, and determine recommendations.
12. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare comprehensive written investigative reports; and to develop and manage confidential sources of information.
13. DCJS certified Law Enforcement Officer.
Additional Considerations
14. Experience in the criminal / juvenile justice system(s).
15. Experience in conducting administrative and criminal investigations and identifying gang activity.
16. Knowledge of gang prevention and intervention programs.
