Job Summary
The Ophthalmology Department at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust has approximately 29,000 attendances per year, serving a client base across all ages from neonates to over 100 years old.
We have full-time and part-time vacancies for an Optical Healthcare Assistant. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced dispensing Optical Assistant or Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly, professional ophthalmic team at our Salisbury purpose-built unit.
The post holder will participate in daily service delivery, working with patients with visual impairments, and have experience in healthcare settings, preferably within secondary care. Qualifications in numeracy and literacy are required, with a preference for NVQ/QCF in Health and Social Care or Care Certificate, or willingness to undertake these. Applicants with dispensing qualifications from primary care are encouraged to apply.
Main duties of the job
* Assist in clinic operations, including diagnostics and patient assessments.
* Support pre- and post-operative clinics and diagnostic activities.
* Address patient queries with support and reassurance.
* Prepare and clean surgical equipment.
* Act as Intravitreal injection runner/escort.
* Ensure clinical areas are prepared and equipment checked.
* Support nursing team with outpatient clinics and diagnostic procedures.
* Manage equipment storage and stock control.

Person Specification
Essential:
* GCSE grade C or equivalent in key skills (numeracy and literacy).
* NVQ/QCF in Health or Health and Social Care Level 2/3 or willingness to undertake Care Certificate.
* Dispensing qualification (preferred for primary care experience).
* Good communication skills, respectful verbal and written communication.
* Experience in an acute hospital or community setting.
* Computer literacy with basic ECDL skills.
Desirable:
* Understanding of the HCA role in Ophthalmology.
* Experience dealing with the public.
