Position Overview

Indie is looking to recruit an experienced Lawyer (In‑House) who will play an important role in providing strategic legal advice and assistance to the Head of Legal function in the areas of commercial property leasing, acquisition, development, improvement and maintenance, property finance and securities.

The successful candidate can be based at our Newcastle NSW, Parramatta NSW, Werribee VIC, or Adelaide SA site.

The successful candidate must possess, or be willing to develop, a thorough understanding of state property laws and practices within a corporate environment. Ideally, they will have experience in at least one Australian state jurisdiction; however, experience across multiple states will be considered an advantage.


Key Responsibilities and Tasks

* Provide strategic legal counsel and support to the Head of Legal, with a particular emphasis on commercial property acquisitions and leasing matters.
* Draft, review and negotiate complex memoranda of understanding, expressions of interest, heads of agreement, agreements for leases, commercial leases, lease options, lease variations, lease surrenders, put and call options and more.
* Manage high‑risk commercial leases and other critical contract and transaction dates and obligations, with confidence and precision.
* Identify the scope of and manage legal and transactional due diligence, where required.
* Ensure our commercial leases and purchase contracts align with project timelines, budget and risk management frameworks.
* Identify legal risks and recommend practical solutions for ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks, including safety issue reporting, taxes GST, land tax, and stamp duty.
* Conduct legal research and remain up to date on emerging issues in property law, keeping the organisation informed of legislative changes and its expected impact.
* Identify legal risks and recommend practical solutions for ensuring maximum benefit, risk avoidance and compliance.
* Work independently, taking ownership and delivering outcomes under pressure.
* At times, work within a team environment, taking leadership or mentoring and leading junior staff, or playing a particular part within a project carried out by a team.


Key Selection Criteria

To be considered for this role you will have:

* A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with a current Australian legal practising certificate.
* Two (2) to five (5) years PAE in property law, preferably in commercial leasing and acquisition.
* Strong knowledge of property law framework in any one or more relevant Australian jurisdictions.
* You are self‑aware, grounded, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, proficient in technology, comfortable operating autonomously, adapt quickly to changing priorities, calm and considered, practical with common sense and prepared to take ownership.


Mandatory Certifications

For this role, applicants must be willing and able to obtain:

* Annual National Police Checks
* Working with Children’s Check (relevant to the state where the candidate will be based).
* A valid practising certificate from the relevant authority in the state where the candidate will be based.

Remuneration

Remuneration will be offered in accordance with the AWCC Enterprise Agreement 2022‑2025, Level 16 ($114,232) - Level 18 ($128,013), depending on experience and qualifications.
