Okala is seeking an experienced Principal Ecological Consultant to join its science team and lead on the delivery of environmental consultancy projects. The successful candidate will oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of Okala’s consultancy-related services, including but not restricted to due diligence and compliance for projects in the UK and abroad, tailored biodiversity survey designs, environmental impact assessments, and technical guidelines and reports. The consultant will report to the Head of Conservation and will work closely with members of both the Science and Conservation teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Lead and manage environmental and biodiversity consultancy projects from bid writing and initiation through to delivery and reporting
* Develop and implement project plans and timelines, ensuring activities are delivered on time and within scope.
* Communicate and engage with clients and key partners, informing them of project progress and milestones.
* Prepare high-quality reports, proposals, and presentations for clients and key partners.
* Assist in the production of technical deliverables, such as GIS-based biodiversity sampling designs, methodological reviews, and data collection protocols.
* Help coordinate and facilitate fieldwork activities and workshops, as per project requirements.
* Liaise with members of Okala’s Business, Science, and Conservation teams as and when necessary.
* Support clients in identifying opportunities for cost-effective biodiversity monitoring and reporting.
* Contribute to business development activities, including writing proposals and identifying new project opportunities.
* Stay current on biodiversity voluntary and mandatory frameworks, both in the UK and abroad, such as NPPF, BNG, IFC PS6, EUDR, GBF, etc.
* Monitor and report on project performance internally, identifying risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
* Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biodiversity Conservation, Environmental Management, or a related field.
* At least 6 years of experience in a senior consulting role related to biodiversity monitoring and conservation, environmental impact assessments, or sustainable development.
* Strong understanding of current national and international environmental regulations and frameworks such IFC PS6, TNFD and others.
* Proven track record of project management, including setting and keeping to project timelines, prioritising tasks, and ensuring cost-effective implementation and delivery.
* Proficiency in preparing high-quality reports, proposals, and other written materials for stakeholders, clients, and funding bodies.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse groups.
