Children's Specialised Physiotherapist (Level 3)

The Therapy team at MKUH are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Physiotherapist to join our Children's Physiotherapy Team. The team delivers physiotherapy services to children and young people aged 0‑19 years within acute and community settings.

There will be opportunities to work in the children's outpatients with both musculoskeletal and neuro‑disability caseloads, the children's inpatient ward, Redway special needs school and hydrotherapy. A 12‑month rotation within Children's Physiotherapy allows experience in these different areas.

The post will involve working in the Children’s Physiotherapy Department based in Stony Stratford Health Centre, Milton Kingdom Hospital and Redway School. Driving between the sites is essential.

We offer comprehensive induction, ongoing clinical and managerial support from experienced specialist staff, regular in‑house training, and opportunities for involvement in service development, including supervision of junior staff and students.

Main duties of the job

• Provide high‑quality evidence‑based assessment and treatment of children and young people aged 0‑19 presenting with a range of conditions.

• Hold responsibility for own caseload and assist other team members with theirs as required.

• Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.

• Undertake evidence‑based audit and quality improvement projects to further own and the team’s clinical practice.

• Make recommendations to the Lead Physiotherapist for changes to practice by the team as appropriate.


Job responsibilities


Clinical

1. Be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of your own work including patient management. Ensure a high standard of clinical care for patients under your management and support junior staff to do likewise.
2. Undertake comprehensive assessment of patients, including those with complex presentations.
3. Formulate, deliver and evaluate individual physiotherapy treatment programmes based on evidence‑based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills.


Professional

1. Maintain own continuing professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of new trends and developments and incorporating them into your work.
2. Take responsibility for:
o Teaching student physiotherapists to graduate level on physiotherapeutic skills and knowledge within core clinical areas.
o Providing support & guidance to junior physiotherapists and physiotherapy clinical support staff.
3. Contribute to the training, assessment and performance management of newly qualified physiotherapists and physiotherapy clinical support staff.


Person Specification


Qualifications and knowledge

* Physiotherapy Degree or equivalent professional qualification
* Registered with the UK Health and Care Professions Council
* Evidence of post‑registration CPD in paediatrics
* Awareness of NHS & Trust systems, policies, procedures & current changes
* Membership of the CSP
* Sound therapeutic and clinical knowledge in paediatrics
* Experience working with therapy assistants


Experience

* Minimum 18 months post‑registration experience in hospital
* Active member of a multidisciplinary team
* Able to independently manage a caseload
* Experience working at Band 6 level within paediatrics
* Completed Band 5 rotation in paediatrics
* Undertaken a project within the area (e.g., best practice project, guideline benchmarking, audit)
* Supervision & training of assistants


Skills

* Ability to organise and prioritise your own caseload
* Understanding of the importance of flexibility within practice and the wider healthcare system
* Practice evidence‑based therapy
* Ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment
* High level of IT skills, including presentation of IT, with the ability to teach others
* Ability to keep accurate and legible patient notes
* Able to appropriately apply a range of musculoskeletal and neurology techniques
* Ability to conduct 1:1 sessions and appraisals with juniors, assistants & students
* IT literacy
* Understanding of audit and outcome measurement


Personal and people development

* Self‑motivated and able to motivate others; evidence of self‑development
* Work under pressure
* Active participation in IT sessions both presenting and receiving
* Mentor students as required
* Confident mentoring of staff more junior than yourself


Communication

* Excellent verbal and non‑verbal communication skills
* Experience dealing with challenging patients or carers within a hospital environment

£39,959 to £48,117 a year, pro rata
