Beechwood is looking for a qualified or newly qualified Speech and Language Therapist who wishes to develop their skills in autism and learning disabilities. The role also involves supporting training in Dysphagia. Beechwood is a specialist residential education service providing person-centred care and education for young people aged 16-25 with Autism Spectrum Conditions, learning disabilities, and complex behavioural presentations.
Main duties of the job
The Speech and Language Therapy Team offers a wide range of therapy sessions and provides training to staff on communication systems. The role includes supporting Dysphagia training. Beechwood is a dynamic college that offers education and residential support to young people, some of whom may present with behavioural challenges.

You will join an existing multidisciplinary team comprising colleagues from clinical psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, psychiatry, dietetics, education, and residential care. Within the wider Iris Care Group, you will be part of a clinical services team working across multiple specialties and disciplines, fostering peer support and resource sharing. We have an active internal CPD process and maintain links with local universities and special interest groups. Our department is engaged in service evaluation and development, focusing on recovery-oriented mental health care, autism-adapted evidence-based therapies, person-centred planning, positive behavioural support, restraint reduction, staff culture measurement, and service user involvement.
Job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
* Work with a specialist/complex caseload, including young adults with Autism, learning difficulties, and other diagnoses, including behaviours that challenge.
* Support dysphagia management and training, attending relevant training sessions as directed by the specialist Speech and Language Therapist.
* Provide assessments, diagnostics, and advice for students on your caseload.
* Plan, deliver, and monitor individual and group therapy sessions.
* Use the Total Communication Approach.
* Utilise Voice Output Devices, including iPads and tablets, as tools for Alternative and Augmentative Communication.
* Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, liaising and coordinating with professionals in residential homes and classes.
* Promote good liaison with external agencies and encourage best practices.
* Contribute advice to families as needed.
* Attend multidisciplinary team meetings, staff meetings, CPDs, and in-service training.
* Prepare clinical reports for assessments, reviews, CHC, and LAC purposes.
* Follow administrative and statistical procedures as required.
* Maintain clinical notes according to professional standards and present information to MDTs.
* Stay updated with new techniques and research, recording developments in the Professional Log of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
* Adhere to communication quality guidelines and care standards.
* Ensure client records and statistical information are current.
* Participate in quality assurance and clinical audits as necessary.
