About us
UCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK, with a world-class reputation. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and has an extensive research portfolio across various areas, from molecular scale to complex systems.
About the role
The post holder will conduct research to develop and understand next-generation electrode materials for advanced Li-ion batteries. This includes applying X-ray characterisation and diagnostic techniques to understand their modes of operation, working closely with industry and university project partners. Responsibilities include advancing battery electrode technologies, developing tools for operando studies, employing multi-scale X-ray imaging techniques such as diffraction and spectroscopic imaging, and performing electrochemical and microstructural diagnostics to understand electrode behaviour. A key aspect is promoting and applying in-situ and operando characterisation methods within the broader battery research efforts. Salary is £43,981 - £52,586 per annum, inclusive of London allowance. This is a fixed-term role until 31st March 2026, subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff.
About you
The successful candidate will hold or expect to obtain a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, or a related field. You should have knowledge of advanced X-ray characterisation of electrochemical energy materials and devices, with a focus on in situ or operando techniques. Demonstrated research experience and working knowledge of X-ray powder diffraction as applied to battery materials or similar are essential.
