Coal Quality Tester (Casual) – Analytical Laboratory
Location: Newcastle, NSW
About the Role
We are currently seeking Coal Quality Testers to join our team in Newcastle. These positions involve hands-on work within our Analytical Laboratory, supporting high-quality testing and analysis processes. Day to Day
Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, your duties will include (but are not limited to):
* Validating test results and ensuring they fall within acceptable repeatability limits
* Accurately entering validated data into the reporting system
* Maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring all calibrations meet company standards
* Conducting a range of coal quality analyses, including:
o Proximate Analysis
o Calorific Value
o Total Sulfur
o Crucible Swelling Number
o CHN
o Gray King Coke Type
o Gieseler & Dilatometer Tests
o RD, XRF, IC, ICP-MS, and other instrumentation
* A strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork
* Basic computer literacy and comfort with technology
* Ability to multitask and perform under pressure
* Physical fitness and willingness to undertake manual handling tasks
* A proactive attitude and openness to learning new systems
* A valid driver’s licence
* Flexibility to work rotating shifts (day, afternoon, and night)
* Willingness to participate in regular drug and alcohol testing

* Previous experience in coal analysis or laboratory instrumentation (e.g., XRF, ICP-MS)
* Diploma or degree in science
Eligibility
To be eligible to work at ALS you must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or either hold or be able to obtain, a valid working visa.
As part of the selection process, a pre-employment medical exam is required, including drug and alcohol assessment.
