Overview
The Head of IT is responsible for providing comprehensive IT services to support academics, staff, students, and visitors across the College, while managing the institution’s computer systems and network infrastructure. The role requires adaptability to evolving hardware and software technologies and to the growing and diverse needs of users. The responsibilities will evolve, and a flexible working approach is essential, especially during peak academic times, system upgrades, and emergency support needs.

Key Responsibilities
* IT Support: Provide day-to-day support to all user groups—staff, students, academics, and visitors—through troubleshooting, helpdesk services, and ensuring the smooth operation of all systems.
* System and Network Management: Oversee the administration of computer systems, servers, and network infrastructure to ensure optimal performance, security, and uptime.
* Strategic Planning and Implementation: Plan, execute, and manage IT projects and system upgrades to keep the College’s technology infrastructure current and capable of meeting future demands.
* Collaboration with Other Departments: Work closely with academic and administrative departments to understand needs and align IT resources with institutional goals.
* Flexibility and Crisis Management: Adapt to changes in the academic calendar, emergencies, or peak usage periods to maintain IT services during critical times such as exams and deadlines.
* Security: Implement and manage robust security protocols to protect systems, networks, and data, including firewalls, encryption, and access control measures.
Essential Skills And Experience
* A relevant degree or equivalent IT experience.
* Strong analytical skills to assess technical and institutional needs and provide optimal solutions.
* Excellent planning and decision-making abilities with the capacity to prioritise in a fast-paced environment.
* Proven experience in implementing, managing, and monitoring network and computer security measures.
* Flexible, professional approach to work with exceptional attention to detail.
* Experience with IT procurement including hardware and software selection and purchasing.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
* Extensive experience with TCP/IP networking, including management/configuration of switches, wireless access points, VLANs, DNS, and DHCP.
* Experience deploying and supporting server and desktop operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS).
* Strong experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, and Group Policy.
* Familiarity with virtualization technologies (ideally VMware).
* Experience administering SQL database servers.
* Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell.
* Advanced knowledge of Ethernet and fibre optic cabling technologies.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse situations.
* Knowledge of mobile operating systems (Android and iOS).
Desirable Skills And Experience
* Experience with T-SQL.
* Familiarity with WordPress CMS.
* Experience with MS SharePoint and MS Teams.
* Experience in maintaining secure web services (e.g., SSL certificates).
* Project management skills.
* Strong man-management experience leading an IT team.
* Knowledge of the higher education sector.
Summary
The Head of IT plays a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, security, and development of the College\'s IT infrastructure. This role leads IT support, system management, and strategic planning to align technology with the College\'s mission and goals. It requires flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to manage multiple priorities, demonstrating technical expertise and leadership.
