Job overview
Sonographer role at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
You will be required to work across all of our sites; Hemel Hempstead, St Albans City Hospital and Watford General Hospital.
As West Herts is a teaching hospital, staff supervision and training is a key element of this role and the post holder would promote and deliver high quality ultrasound training to student, sonographers, radiographers, midwives and registrars.
Outside of work you’ll also benefit from being on good transport links with London (underground), being a short walk into different shopping centres and our department socials.
Main duties of the job
This role is that of an advanced clinical practitioner working with a high degree of autonomy and clinical decision-making responsibility.
Expert clinical practitioner, managing a complex case load; may either be a clinical specialist, a manager or both. Has a role in governance, leadership, quality assurance, teaching and supervision in addition to their clinical case load. May participate in research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
A wide range of examinations will be performed independently, including more complex and acute cases from a broad range of referral sources.
Areas of specialism will include general medical, obstetrics and gynae or interventional US guided procedures.
The Sonographer will independently produce interpretative reports giving a differential diagnosis of complex findings. Guidance on future patient management may be offered within the report. Provides second opinions to junior staff in their chosen subspecialty. Has a significant role in teaching less experienced staff.
Actively participates in CPD including audit of self and peers; providing feedback and learning outcomes as appropriate.
To be independently & autonomously performing a wide range of examinations, including complex cases.
Provide expertise, supervision, peer review and guidance to less experienced colleagues.
Person specification
Education and qualifications
* DMU or PgD in Ultrasound
* Hold or working towards an MSc.
* Advanced clinical study
Knowledge
* Complex knowledge of pathologies
* Detailed knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy
* Actively participates in CPD including facilitating audit and undertaking research relevant to service development and professional needs
Experience
* Proficient NHS ultrasound experience in Obstetrics, gynaecology and general medical ultrasound
* Or / Ultrasound guided interventional procedures
* Previously worked at Enhanced Practice
