Respiratory Physiologist / Sleep Practitioner

Job overview
We are looking for a qualified Respiratory Physiologist / Sleep Practitioner to cover maternity leave for 12 months.
The successful applicant will work with the current Lead and Team to support the development and provision of service. You would have the opportunity to help provide a high quality, appropriate and effective specialist respiratory testing service performing a full range of lung function tests, Sleep Studies, CPAP set ups and CPAP follow ups for outpatients.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
The role requires good interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the post holder being computer literate and having knowledge of Microsoft word and Excel. There is a need for a high standard of literacy and numeracy within the work.
Due to the nature of the work, and in the interests of patient care, there is a need for absolute accuracy and patient confidentiality at all times as well as adherence to rigorous quality procedures, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). In turn this requires the post holder to be committed, conscientious and motivated and able to work effectively as a member of a team in a pressured environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To plan, undertake and perform simple, specialist, complex and highly complex diagnostic assessments in accordance with ARTP/BTS guidelines.
a) Spirometry, peak flow rates, flow/volume loops
b) Gas transfer
d) Reversibility of airways obstruction with bronchodilators
e) Field exercise tests (6MWT)
f) Overnight sleep apnoea screening
g) Arterial blood gas performance and analysis
h) Exhaled and nasal nitric oxide
i) Bronchial provocation tests for the diagnosis of asthma/ bronchial hyper-responsiveness (Mannitol)
j) Respiratory muscle assessment
k) CPAP assessment and provision.
l) Hypoxic challenge
m) Pulmonary shunt assessments
n) Full cardio-pulmonary exercise tests (CPET)
2. Production of reports
3. Verbal and written interpretation to referring medical team and other professionals where appropriate for simple and specialist assessments.
4. As a minimum be trained in Basic Life Support.

Person specification
Qualifications
* • Undergraduate degree in clinical physiology or Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) qualification or equivalent science related subject.
* • Professional Body Registration a) AHCS b) ARTP (Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology)
* • Professional Exams a) ARTP Parts I & II b) Associate & Practitioner Certificates
* • Or working towards these
Knowledge & Experience
* • A thorough proven knowledge of Respiratory and Sleep Physiology
* • Post qualification demonstrable experience within a similar role
* • Demonstrable experience in negotiation and liaison with employers and/or professional bodies in Clinical Physiology
* • A wide range of abilities in performing and reporting lung function tests.
* • A sound proven knowledge of scoring sleep studies.
* • The ability to work effectively as part of a team using individual initiative.
* • The ability to integrate quickly into the lung function department.
* • Good interpersonal skills.
