We’re looking for a skilled and reliable Mechanical Engineer to join our Street Scene Fleet Services team. You’ll play a crucial role in maintaining the council’s diverse fleet of vehicles—helping to keep Birmingham running smoothly, safely and efficiently.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the repair, maintenance and diagnostics of a variety of vehicles, including HGVs, light commercials and specialist refuse collection vehicles. Key duties include:

* Diagnosing faults and performing repairs using a range of diagnostic equipment
* Maintaining and repairing hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic systems
* Preparing vehicles for MOT and carrying out inspections to required standards
* Completing accurate service records and timesheets
* Performing roadside repairs when required
* Supporting Workshop Management with general tasks
* Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety regulations at all times.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a qualified, motivated and hands-on Mechanical Engineer with a passion for vehicle maintenance and a commitment to high standards of service and safety. The ideal candidate will bring both technical expertise and a proactive attitude to the role.

You Should Have:

* Proven experience maintaining and repairing HGVs and light commercial vehicles – You’ll be confident working with a variety of vehicle types, diagnosing faults and delivering effective repairs in line with industry and manufacturer standards. Your background should include hands-on work with diesel engines, braking systems, suspension, transmissions and other key vehicle components.
* A strong diagnostic skillset – You’ll be comfortable using a wide range of modern diagnostic tools and software to identify mechanical, electrical and electronic faults quickly and accurately.
* Thorough knowledge of current HGV MOT testing standards and regulations – You’ll understand what’s required to ensure vehicles are safe, roadworthy and compliant.
* A problem-solving mindset – You’re someone who takes initiative, works well under pressure and actively looks for solutions to technical challenges.
* Great communication and teamwork skills – Whether working independently or as part of a team, you’ll be able to share information clearly and work collaboratively to get the job done.
* A flexible and adaptable approach – You’ll be working in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change rapidly. The ability to respond to urgent repairs, shift tasks as needed and support the team—whether in the workshop or out on the road—is essential.
