Overview

Applications are invited for a skilled CNC machinist / Mechanical Workshop Technician vacancy within the University of Oxford’s Department of Physics.

The post is full time and permanent.

The successful candidate will join the busy Mechanical Engineering Group (MEG) within one of the largest departments in the University, giving the opportunity to work on and contribute to world‑leading high–profile scientific projects.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will be required to manufacture high‑precision components for experimental equipment using CNC and manual machine tools. You will also be involved in the fitting and assembly of components, sub‑assemblies, and complete instruments, ensuring all work meets required standards of accuracy and finish.

The ability to accurately interpret engineering drawings, identify inconsistencies, and liaise effectively with academic, research and design engineers is essential.

A key aspect of the role is the safe and efficient operation of CNC and conventional workshop machinery, contributing to the development and maintenance of experimental systems. Problem‑solving and working under your own initiative are part of the role, as is constructive support when required.

On occasion, you may assist with the installation, modification or maintenance of research apparatus at sites within the UK or overseas.

Qualifications

Applicants should preferably have completed a recognised apprenticeship and hold a BTEC Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Mechanical or Production Engineering or an equivalent qualification. Lower qualifications would be considered if offset by experience significantly greater than the minimum specified above.

Previous experience in the field of high technology and scientific research would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will have previous experience manufacturing components using CNC and standard machines, with Heidenhain knowledge and CAD/CAM experience desirable but not essential.

Additional experience with carbon fibre or composite materials, including lay‑up, laminating, trimming or finishing, would be highly advantageous.

How to Apply

Please direct enquiries about the role to Andy Stokes (andy.stokes@physics.ox.ac.uk).

Only applications received before midday (UK time) 15/12/2025 can be considered. You will be required to upload a supporting statement, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.
