Wecurrently have an opportunity to join our Pre-operative Assessment team at Kidderminster Treatment Centre on a 22.5 hour contract. As a Band 3 Healthcare assistant you will beresponsible for seeing patients in Pre-operative Assessment support clinic toundertake investigations relevant to the patients assessment. This willinclude, but is not limited to, venepuncture, ECGs, MRSA swabbing and CPE sampling. You will also undertake thorough documentation viaour online assessment tool, Synopsis. IT literacy is also integral to the jobrole.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Healthcare assistant you will be expected to prep, plan and run your own clinic assigned to you via PAS. This will include health promotion, explaining patient information and clinical skills such as ECGs and Venepuncture. You will be supported by the Nursing team and the wider Countywide team to assist in the completion of patient's pre-assessments prior to their surgery date.

Job responsibilities

Key Working Relationships:Department staffPatients and theirrelatives/carers/significant otherStaff in other departmentsRisk Assessment:The post involves manual handling activities,exposure to bodily fluids and exposure to high noise levels. It may alsoinvolve exposure to challenging behaviour.Job Purpose:The Senior Health Care Assistantis a member of the department team who implements prescribed care and/orundertakes some higher-level clinical activities as directed by a registerednurse. The main dimensions of the role are to:Tosupport the professionally qualified staff and work under their direction toprovide quality nursing care, therapy activity, treatments and proceduresdirectly to patients.Tomentor and supervise and teach Health Care Assistants.Tolead and co-ordinate a range of clinical and non-clinical tasks andresponsibilities undertaken by Health Care Assistants.Tosupport the department and staff to provide a high quality service.Itis important to have an understanding of the range of work procedures andpractices that are required within Pre-Operative Assessment when caring for arange of patients from different specialties, this will be underpinned bytheoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience.KeyDuties:Assistingwith General Aspects of Care:Beinvolved in patient booking in process as directed by registered nurseBeaware of the need to greet Patients, relatives & visitors to the unit andascertain the purpose of their visit including the #CallMe initiative.Movingand handling of patients.Assistingpatients and relatives to use wheelchairsAssistwith patients mobilisation, ensuring safe environment and using appropriatetechniques and aids when necessary.Assist the multi professional team to prepare andsupport patientsDressing/undressingof patients when undertaking investigationsSafekeeping of patients property/valuablesEscortof patients to and from lavatory.Assistin the care of relatives and visitors.Chaperoneprofessional staff where appropriate.Measuringblood pressure, body temperature, pulse rate and respiration and completing thenecessary documentation.Measuringpatients height and weight as directed by a registered nurse and recording onthe appropriate documentation.Undertakinginvestigations such as ECG, venepuncture and MRSA swabs.Beadaptable and flexible to working in various areas of the department asrequired.Dressingof unoccupied trolleys/couches, tying up of dirty linen bags and despatching tolaundry.Cleaningand tidying clinic areas.Replenishingof stock cupboards.Pre-Operative Assessment:To prepare clinical rooms foroutpatient clinics to ensure a smooth running clinic. To put away stock and help maintainstock levels.Manage HCA pre-operative assessmentclinics and escalate any concerns with patients to trained nursesCommunications and Relationships:Demonstrate an ability tocommunicate with patients with varying needs i.e.; Elderly, Sensory impaired,Language differences.The Healthcare Assistants relationshipwith both staff and patients should be discreet, bearing in mind that allinformation regarding patients must be kept confidential.Report to the nurse in charge of theunit matters of concern relating to patients and the unit environment.Answer the telephone, refer toappropriate person.Attend to unit reports and meetingswhen appropriate.Demonstrate knowledge andunderstanding of health and safety at work in order to maintain a safeenvironment.Undertake duties outside yourworking area (e.g. delivery and collection) to assist in maintaining goodcommunications.Participate in patient handovers.Present Professional imageappropriate to the working environment.Clinical Support:Where training has been provided andcompetence assured undertake and monitor baseline and routine patientobservations, Blood pressure, pulse, peripheral oxygen saturation and bloodglucose. Reporting any changes in a timely manner to a qualified nurse andensuring these are accurately recorded in patient records.Apply a simple range of dressingsusing both clean and aseptic techniques after venepuncture, if required.Collect blood samples (peripheral orvenous) and directed by a qualified nurse, ensuring its safe storage, transportor disposal as appropriate.Care for a small group of patientswithout direct supervision but under the direction of a registered.Undertake an associate link/linknurse role where appropriate.Undertake ECGsCleaning:Maintain tidiness and cleanliness ofareas and equipment as instructed.Clerical Duties:Reception/telephone dutiesBasic computer skillsObtaining case notes/x-raysFilingAssist in the preparation of medicaland nursing notes for ward rounds/clinicsMaintain stocks of stationary andcare pathwaysEducation:Support other health care assistantsthrough mentorship and local induction.

Experience

* Previous experience as a Health Care Assistant in an acute hospital environment
* Experience in POA environment


Qualifications

* NVQ Level 3 in Direct Care,or equivalent/ or willing to work towards
* Key Skills literacy/numeracy or equivalent


Skills and Abilities

* Able to mentor and supervise other HCAs/Student Nurses in the working environment
* ECG Trained
* Computer Literate
* Knowledge of Trust IT systems i.e. Bluespier, CLIP, ICE and PAS


Other job requirements

* Must be flexible with shift patterns and internal rotation.
* Confidentiality
* May be required to work in other departments as required.
* This post requires the post holder to undertake core skills
* Fitness and mobility in order to be physically active throughout a shift and undertake manual handling activities.
