The Role: Mid-Level VFX Artist
As a Mid-Level VFX Artist, you will sit at the intersection of Art, Design, and Technology. You will be a key contributor within our creative Art Department, supporting multiple disciplines to produce high-quality visual effects for environments, characters, and gameplay mechanics.
Your work will define the “feel” of our games. Whether it’s the subtle ambiance of a glowing forest or the high-octane impact of a combat mechanic, you will ensure that every particle and shader matches the ambition and cinematic vision of the studio.
* End-to-End Creation: You will take effects from initial concept and modeling/texture creation through to final implementation and optimization within Unreal Engine 5.
* Environmental & Gameplay Effects: Designing a diverse range of effects including smoke, explosions, fire, magical abilities, and interactive environmental hazards.
* Stylistic Consistency: Working closely with the Art Director to ensure that all VFX work adheres to the project’s specific art style and visual language.
2. Cross-Disciplinary Liaison
* Technical Collaboration: Liaise with the Design, Animation, and Code teams to understand the functional requirements of an effect.
* Implementation Support: Assist in the technical setup of effects to ensure they trigger correctly and perform efficiently within the game logic.
3. Pipeline and Tooling
* Optimization: Take responsibility for solving pipeline issues and technical hurdles. You will ensure all assets fit within performance and memory budgets without sacrificing visual fidelity.
* Template Creation: Develop effect templates that can be reused or adapted by the team to speed up production workflows.
* Tool Enhancement: Research and provide options for new effects and aid in the development of custom tools for the VFX and Art teams.
Detailed Requirements: What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a candidate who balances artistic flair with technical discipline. You should be a “solution-driven” artist who enjoys the puzzle of making complex visuals run smoothly in real-time.
Professional Experience
* Minimum 1 Year Experience: Proven track record in a professional VFX Artist role within the games industry.
* Shipped Title: You must have at least one shipped game title under your belt, demonstrating an understanding of the full development lifecycle.
* Unreal Engine & Niagara: Expert-level knowledge of the Niagara VFX system is essential. You should be comfortable with simulation stages, data interfaces, and particle logic.
* DCC Tools: High proficiency in Autodesk Maya for mesh and animation creation, alongside industry-standard 2D tools like Photoshop and After Effects.
* Real-Time Fundamentals: A deep understanding of shaders, overdraw, draw calls, and how VFX impact GPU/CPU performance.
* Simulation Tools (Desired): Ideally, you have experience with fluid simulators such as EmberGen, Houdini, or Niagara Fluids to create high-end volumetric data.
Soft Skills and Artistic Vision
* Animation Principles: A solid grasp of timing, weight, pace, and tension. You know how to make an effect “pop” and feel satisfying to the player.
* Adaptability: The ability to pivot between different art styles, from highly stylized to realistic, depending on the project needs.
* Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate technical concepts to non-technical departments.
* Receptive Mindset: A positive attitude toward constructive criticism and the ability to iterate quickly based on feedback.
