Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, enthusiastic and experienced leader to become a key member of the Specialist Medicine Clinical Service Unit (CSU) leadership team. The successful candidate will provide leadership and management support to ensure high quality, safe, effective and patient‑centred services across the CSU. Working alongside the Senior General Manager and Clinical Director, the post offers career development and will be responsible for the delivery of financial, strategic and operational standards.
The post holder will be a role model for staff, demonstrating the Trust's values through leadership behaviours, collaborating with colleagues, and remaining flexible and resilient to cope with the demands and changing needs of the service. Influencing and negotiating to improve the service offered by the CSU is also essential.
Reporting to the Clinical Director or the Senior General Manager as appropriate, the post holder is responsible, in conjunction with the CSU triumvirate, for the safe and effective delivery of all patient services within the CSU, achieving operational performance targets including access, finance and quality. The post holder will also improve services following best practice standards within the available income and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and governance requirements. Additionally, the General Manager will foster relationships with the Corporate Operations Team, Clinical Directors, Deputy Directors of Nursing, Specialty Leads and Matrons to drive operational performance, service delivery and organisational priorities.
Key Responsibilities
* Be a key member of the CSU Leadership Team, taking full responsibility for actions and keeping other team members fully informed at all times.
* In partnership with clinical colleagues, ensure activity and quality targets are achieved and develop action plans to manage any variances.
* Hold operational and strategic responsibility for pathway management and delivery of performance targets for all specialties within the CSU, including waiting list management, access standards, cancer standards, workforce and finance.
* Manage operational flow, capacity and demand, ensuring pathways are optimised to support performance targets and financial targets including CIP.
* Maintain daily processes to identify early risks to achievement of performance targets and develop detailed recovery plans for any area below expected performance.
* Ensure the availability of services is optimised for the benefit of patients and arrange appropriate contingency arrangements if normal service cannot be provided.
* Provide high quality of care to patients through effective operational delivery.
* Demonstrate a clear commitment to and role‑model the Trust values.
* Keep the Clinical Director updated on all performance areas within the CSU and highlight any specialties of concern.
* Develop business cases on behalf of the Clinical Director to support service development or improvement.
* Support ongoing productivity and efficiency improvements across the organisation.
* Continuously improve administrative/clinical pathways and procedures to support the delivery of efficient and effective services, achieving and maintaining targets and internal performance measures.
* Ensure maintenance and quality assurance of all equipment resources.
* Deputise for the Senior General Manager when required, working autonomously and making decisions when necessary.
* Implement robust processes for patient administration, recording and coding activity within the unit, ensuring income is received.
