Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy to join Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Based at Moorgreen Hospital, this is an exciting opportunity to shape and deliver psychotherapy training for our growing cohort of over 200 resident doctors, while contributing to high-quality, compassionate patient care.

You will join a friendly and supportive postgraduate and medical education team, working alongside an established Consultant colleague and experienced psychologists, AHPs and clinical tutors. This role offers the opportunity to take a leading role in teaching, supervision and reflective practice groups, while also contributing to service development and the potential growth of higher psychotherapy training across the Trust. With a generous allocation of Supporting Professional Activities, strong CPD support, and access to a wide network of professional colleagues, this is an outstanding opportunity to combine clinical excellence with education, leadership and innovation. Hampshire offers an enviable quality of life with cities, countryside, excellent schools and London within easy reach.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

As Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy, you will play a key role in delivering and overseeing psychotherapy education across the Wessex Psychiatry training programme. Your responsibilities will include teaching, supervision of clinical cases, leading Balint and reflective practice groups, and supporting resident doctors in the development of psychodynamic skills. You will provide clinical leadership, ensuring the highest standards of evidence-based practice, robust risk management and recovery-focused care. Working collaboratively with colleagues in psychology, community teams and postgraduate education, you will contribute to shaping new pathways and expanding psychotherapeutic initiatives across the Trust. The role requires excellent clinical and teaching skills, the ability to inspire and support others, and a flexible approach to service development. You will also participate in appraisal, CPD, governance, and contribute to Trust-wide priorities, including service innovation, staff wellbeing and quality improvement.
