Job Summary

An opportunity to join an established cohesive team of Radiologists supporting clinicians and delivering acute and elective imaging in both specialist areas and in general radiology. The post/s is replacement post to support paediatric and gynaecological imaging. This will also complement the existing expertise within the department and to manage expanding demands for imaging from the Emergency department, Cancer services, as well as the general diagnostic imaging workload.


Main Duties of the Job

This post covers the full scope of a Consultant Radiologist role: vetting and reporting; sub‑specialty MDT preparation/attendance; duty sessions (hot reporting, CT/MRI and emergency imaging); and on‑call.


Job Plan & Working

The job plan will be agreed on appointment and reviewed at least annually, including a minimum 1.5 SPA with the remainder DCC (additional NHS roles may attract further PAs). Remote working is supported within the Trust and EMRAD consortium; remote workstations may be available subject to capacity.

The postholder will work with the CBU management team to deliver efficient, best‑practice services with appropriate governance. On‑call is included in the weekly timetable: currently 1 in 12, comprising one weekday (5pm‑8pm) and shared weekends (10am‑4pm); 1 PA is currently allocated. Opportunities exist for modality/specialty, audit, governance and education leads.

The postholder will provide cross‑cover for Consultant colleagues during annual leave, attend weekly MDTs and departmental meetings, and provide timely advice to GPs and hospital clinicians, including appropriate vetting during Duty.

All Consultants contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching/supervision, audit and (where required) research activity.


About Us

We undertake in excess of 240,000 examinations per year. The directorate's main x‑ray department offers the usual range of examinations and modern equipment. The main department boasts DR, CR, a DR Interventional Suite, 5 MRI scanners, 4 CT scanners, one gamma camera, and dedicated Obstetric and general Ultrasound Departments. The Trust is the county centre for PPCI and has 3 Cardiac Cath Labs. The Trust currently has a GE PACS and is part of the EMRAD Consortium.

The successful candidate must hold FRCR or equivalent and be fully registered with the GMC and either be on or within 6 months of entry onto the Specialist Register on the date of interview.

Person Specification


Knowledge & Experience (Essential)

* Extensive experience in general radiology including plain film interpretation, ultrasound, CT, fluoroscopy and MRI.
* Competency in high volume reporting and reporting for MDT meetings.
* Competency in sub‑specialty of interest.


Education, Training & Qualifications (Essential)

* Basic Medical Qualification (MB ChB/MBBS or equivalent). FRCR or equivalent.
* Certificate of Specialist Training in Radiology (or be within 6 months of its award at time of Advisory Appointment Committee).
* At least 2 years of working in radiology in NHS.
* Evidence of completion of a recognised training programme offering wide radiological experience.
* Sub‑speciality training and working experience in NHS.


Desirable

* Additional undergraduate or postgraduate qualification.


Skills (Essential)

* Interest in teaching medical undergraduates, radiology and non‑radiology junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
* Experience of teaching in NHS.
* Evidence of continuing professional development. Ability to contribute to the continuing development of the radiology service in line with new developments and changes in demand. Teaching junior medical and other staff.
* Maintain interests in subspecialty areas, teaching and service improvement.
