The Maintenance & Facilities Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and delivery of maintenance and facilities services across Derwen College. The role ensures that the college's buildings, grounds, plant, and services are safe, compliant, well maintained, and fit for purpose, supporting an outstanding learning and residential environment for learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
The postholder will lead a small maintenance team, coordinate contractors, and work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure high standards of health & safety, compliance, and customer service
Key Responsibilities:
* Supervise and coordinate the daily work of the maintenance and facilities team, allocating tasks and monitoring performance.
* Deliver planned and reactive maintenance across all college buildings, residential accommodation, and external areas.
* Ensure maintenance requests are prioritised and completed efficiently, minimising disruption to students, staff, and visitors.
* Maintain accurate records of work completed, inspections, and statutory checks.
* Assist with projects, refurbishments, and improvements to the college estate.
* Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
* Ensure the college estate is safe, secure, and compliant with all relevant legislation and best practice, including health & safety, fire safety, COSHH, asbestos awareness, legionella, and statutory inspections.
* Support risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work for maintenance activities.
* Line manage and support maintenance staff, including induction, training, performance management, and day-to-day supervision.
* Encourage a positive, professional, and customer-focused approach within the team.
* Support workforce planning, including cover arrangements and on-call or out-of-hours support.
* Liaise with and supervise external contractors, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and to required standards.
* Assist with sourcing quotations and monitoring value for money in line with college procedures.
Person Specification:
* Proven experience in a maintenance, facilities, or estates role.
* Experience of supervising or leading a team.
* Experience working in a complex building environment (e.g. education, healthcare, residential, or similar).
* Good working knowledge of building maintenance, repairs, and facilities operations.
* Sound understanding of health & safety legislation and compliance requirements.
* Ability to plan, prioritise, and manage workloads effectively.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused approach.
* Ability to work calmly and effectively in a busy, learner-centred environment.
* Relevant trade qualification or equivalent practical experience.
* IOSH Managing Safely or willingness to work towards.
* Full UK driving licence (or ability to travel between sites).
This is a full-time role working Monday to Friday, 08:45am - 17:00, additionally it includes 1 in 7 weekends of working 08:45am-12:30pm, Saturday & Sunday, while being on-call.
