Bank GP OOH Care Support Worker

The closing date is 26 May 2026.

The role of GP Out of Hours is to meet primary health care needs of patients presenting outside of usual GP practice hours. Where appropriate patients are then referred to specialist teams within and/or external to the hospital, or provided with advice for ongoing self‑care.

The post holder will work in GP Out of Hours supporting clinicians and offer support to reception as required. The post holder will support and care for patients within the clinical setting working under the supervision of clinical staff, and will assist clinical colleagues with investigations.


Core Responsibilities

* Be familiar with, and work to, the protocols and policies of the GP OOH service and Trust policies, paying particular attention to the Chaperoning and Infection Control policies.
* Closely liaise with other disciplines and provide a courteous, reliable and quality service to patients, relatives and carers, healthcare professionals, internal departments and outside organisations.
* Be aware of Health and Safety aspects for staff and patients and promote a safe environment to work in.
* Have a thorough knowledge of how to prepare, care for and clean equipment within the department and restock supplies.
* Commit to further training as required by both elements of the role and be competent to assist in the training of others.


Clinical Support

* Undertake patient observations (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturations, blood glucose, respirations, pain assessment) and report results to the clinician.
* Recognise and escalade abnormalities or emergencies promptly.
* Perform clinical procedures as directed by a clinician, including:
o ECG recordings
o Pregnancy and urine testing (including preparing samples for microscopy)
o Assist in providing basic life support during cardiac arrest situations.


Patient Care and Comfort

* Assist patients with mobility, moving and handling, and toileting needs.
* Support patients with personal hygiene and dignity, including undressing for examination.
* Provide reassurance, information, and comfort to patients and relatives in waiting areas, ensuring access to refreshments where appropriate.


Operational Support

* Escort patients to and from departments or wards, following clinical assessment.
* Support clinicians during periods of high demand or escalation.
* Assist the Emergency Department when GP OOH workload allows.


Professional Responsibilities

* Maintain up‑to‑date Mandatory and Essential Skills Training.
* Escalate concerns to clinicians or practitioners in a timely manner.
* Contribute to maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive clinical environment.


Person Specification

* Able to demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy
* Care Certificate
* Experience of working in a clinical role in health care
* Good verbal and written communication skills
* Basic IT skills
* Experience in working in an acute care setting
* Motivation to learn new knowledge
* Ability to bladder scan, competent at ECGs and undertaking urinalysis
* Understands the need for patient confidentiality and a professional approach


Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Salary: £25,760 to £27,476 a year pro rata.
