Salary: £46,682 – pay award pending (effective from 1 April 2025)

Overview
Working as part of the People and Organisational Development leadership team, this role provides leadership of the health, safety and wellbeing provision for NatureScot. The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Manager will support staff in a variety of work activities, giving effective advice and guidance to managers, employees, and contractors where relevant. You will work with leadership and colleagues at all levels to understand, learn, and share good and emerging practices to support an improving health, safety and wellbeing culture. There is a network of Health, Safety and Wellbeing Coordinators; you will have oversight for this network and promote good practice across NatureScot. You will ensure guidance is clear and implemented consistently and develop solutions and systems to manage health, safety and wellbeing risks.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
* Promote good health, safety and wellbeing practice throughout NatureScot activities.
* Provide leadership of the provision of health, safety and wellbeing support for the organisation.
* Give clear, accurate and timely professional advice and guidance to managers and employees on health, safety and wellbeing matters.
* Devising standardised safety practices and ensuring adoption and maintenance.
* Raise awareness of policies across Activity and National Operations Teams; ensure safety on relevant training courses.
* Coordinate health, safety and wellbeing monitoring and auditing to meet Health and Safety legislation and organisational policy requirements.
* Lead on Accident and Incident Reporting Procedures, maintain statistics, analyse trends, and implement remedial actions where appropriate.
* Ensure effective contract management of key health, safety and wellbeing contracts.
* Collate and present quarterly reports to the Senior Management Team and, as required, to the Board and Audit and Risk Committee.
* Lead investigation of serious accidents and RIDDOR reportable incidents; implement preventive actions.
* Lead a rolling programme of audits/support visits across NatureScot sites.
* Collaborate with stakeholders to drive continuous improvement of health, safety and wellbeing culture.
* Support the quarterly Health, Safety and Wellbeing Forum and Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee, providing leadership and secretariat support as required.
* Promote effective risk control and robust health, safety and wellbeing management systems.
* Review and develop health, safety and wellbeing policy and guidance; develop new guidance as appropriate.
* Develop and deliver health, safety and wellbeing training, utilising external providers or partnering with the wider P&OD team when required.
* Contribute to HS&W priorities for NatureScot and ensure alignment with the corporate plan.
* Work with Health, Safety and Wellbeing Coordinators, Trade Union Representatives, and the Property team to ensure compliance with policies and monitoring processes.
* Develop and maintain relationships with Trade Union Health and Safety Representatives, Coordinators and leadership; engage external experts when necessary (e.g., partners across the Environment and Energy Leadership Group).
Essential Skills and Qualifications
* Experience developing and applying health, safety and wellbeing systems within a complex, dispersed organisation.
* NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing or equivalent.
* Chartered membership of IOSH.
* Ability to plan and prioritise a complex workload and allocate resources to meet deadlines.
* Proven track record advising and managing health, safety and wellbeing tasks across all organisational levels.
* Up-to-date knowledge of Health, Safety and Wellbeing legislation.
* Experience producing written reports, data visualisation, and presenting findings to drive solutions and mitigate risks.
* Flexible, pragmatic, proactive approach to HS&W matters.
* Self-motivated with initiative and a solution-focused mindset; able to work independently with minimal supervision.
* Strong organisational skills and ability to utilise digital solutions.
* Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with colleagues across a geographically dispersed organisation.
* Good working knowledge of MS Office products.
Pre-requisites
* Right to work in the UK.
* Standard Disclosure Scotland check.
* Full, clean UK driving licence.
* Gaelic language skills are desirable in support of the Gaelic Language Plan.
