Belmont Recruitment are currently looking for an experienced VAT Accountant to join the Financial Management Service within a local authority on a temporary basis. This is an initial 3-month contract with the strong possibility of extension, working as part of the Council’s Financial Management team to deliver high-quality VAT and tax advisory services. You will provide specialist VAT advice to support key projects, developments, and financial planning across the organisation, ensuring compliance and minimising tax liability risks. Key Responsibilities * Manage all aspects of VAT and non-payroll taxation, including tax planning to minimise financial risk. * Advise on VAT implications of major projects, policies, and service plans. * Monitor the Council’s VAT partial exemption position and complete year-end calculations. * Manage and monitor the Option to Tax process. * Provide expert advice and solutions on VAT-related queries for internal clients and partners. * Prepare accurate financial reports and statements to high professional standards. * Represent the Finance Team at working groups, external partnerships, and special projects. What We’re Looking For * Proven experience in VAT accounting, preferably within local government or public sector finance. * Strong knowledge of VAT legislation and tax compliance. * Ability to manage complex financial projects and provide strategic tax advice. * Excellent communication skills for liaising with clients, stakeholders, and external partners. * Ability to work independently and deliver accurate results to tight deadlines.
