An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Orthodontics to join NHS Dumfries and Galloway, delivering a consultant‑led hospital orthodontic service based at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI).
This role offers the chance to focus on complex multidisciplinary orthodontic care, including dentofacial deformity, craniofacial and hypodontia cases, within a supportive and well‑resourced department - all while enjoying outstanding work‑life balance in one of Scotland's most beautiful regions.
About the Role
The successful candidate will provide a diagnostic and advisory orthodontic service to patients referred to the Area Orthodontic Department at DGRI. The post is primarily focused on the interdisciplinary management of complex orthodontic cases, working closely with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Oral Surgery and other specialist colleagues.
This is a consultant‑led service with opportunities to shape service delivery, supervise training grades, and contribute to regional orthodontic provision across Dumfries and Galloway.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide consultant‑level orthodontic assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning
2. Lead the interdisciplinary management of:Dentofacial and craniofacial cases, Hypodontia and complex orthodontic patients
3. Participate in weekly multidisciplinary orthognathic / craniofacial clinics
4. Joint consultant clinics with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
5. Orthodontic planning and management of orthognathic and dento‑alveolar surgical cases
6. Clinical supervision and case triage for training grades
7. Local management of CLAP orthodontic cases, liaising with the regional Cleft Team
8. Contribute to clinical audit, governance and service development
9. Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training

10. Consultant‑led Hospital Orthodontic Service with regional reach
11. Main base at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, with a peripheral clinic at Galloway Community Hospital (Stranraer)
12. Close integration with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, sharing facilities and support staff
13. Modern clinic rooms with PACS and electronic patient records
14. Dedicated orthodontic nursing, secretarial and technical support
15. Access to specialist orthodontic and OMFS technical services via QEUH and Glasgow Dental Hospital
16. Excellent postgraduate education facilities within the DGRI Education Centre
What We're Looking For
Essential
17. BDS (or equivalent dental qualification)
18. GMC registration with licence to practise
19. MOrth RCS (or equivalent)
20. ISFE / FDSRCS (Orthodontics) or within 6 months of attainment
21. Completed recognised orthodontic training pathway
22. Excellent communication and team‑working skills
Desirable
23. Experience or interest in complex multidisciplinary orthodontic care
24. Teaching, audit or service development experience
25. Additional academic or specialist orthodontic qualifications
