About the role
We are recruiting a Night Registered General Nurse for the residential, community‑focused care home, Kenway Court, in Southend‑on‑Sea. The role involves supporting people with intellectual and physical disabilities and providing nursing care to those with complex needs.
Applicants must hold a valid NMC PIN. Key duties include ensuring the highest standard of clinical care, conducting assessments, administering medication, and implementing and evaluating care plans.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
* 1. To act as shift leader when allocated on the roster, ensuring all required tasks for the safety of service users are undertaken and recorded.
* 2. To monitor staffing levels and report shortfalls to the line manager, seeking approval for replacement cover.
* 3. To act as a role model in the clinical setting, demonstrating evidence‑based, client‑centred care for service users with physical and/or learning disabilities.
* 4. To coordinate, prepare and participate in service‑user reviews, including preparing appropriate reports before meetings.
* 5. To provide expert nursing advice and support to the multi‑disciplinary team, caring for service users, especially within the residential home.
* 6. To undertake quality standards monitoring and a clinical audit system for care of service users with physical disabilities.
* 7. To collaborate with the multi‑disciplinary team to ensure that care delivered to service users, their families or carers is quality‑driven and aligned with best practice and quality standards.
* 8. To participate in holistic care plan meetings, multi‑disciplinary team meetings and case conferences.
* 9. To promote a homely atmosphere where service users’ choice, rights, freedom and dignity are preserved.
* 10. To work with the Deputy Manager to identify areas for change or improvement in treatment, care and support for service users.
* 11. To collaborate with colleagues to identify family and carers needs and advise residential staff on meeting these needs as appropriate.
* 12. To ensure all stores and other areas of potential loss, including confidential service‑user and staff information, are secured at all times according to Shaftesbury policies and procedures.
* 13. To report, record and take remedial action on complaints, compliments, accidents, incidents and safeguarding incidents within the timeframes set by Shaftesbury policy and procedure.
* 14. To be a key nurse for individual service users with a nursing care package.
* 15. To ensure that Shaftesbury policy and procedures are adhered to.
* 16. To act as an educational resource for the multi‑disciplinary team.
* 17. To provide specialist input on relevant in‑house training courses and post‑registration courses.
* 18. To receive clinical/line management supervision from the Deputy Manager and participate in annual appraisal.
* 19. To keep appropriate nursing knowledge up to date.
* 20. To maintain professional registration with NMC, ensuring Shaftesbury is updated on registration issues.
* 21. To network with and establish effective relationships with residents, families/carers, professional and managerial colleagues.
* 22. To work with colleagues on service‑user and family education where relevant.
* 23. To network with local PCT staff, GPs and other specialist multidisciplinary professionals.
* 24. To participate in ensuring effective communication systems across all involved in the care of service users.
* 25. To collaborate with the Unit Manager and other clinical specialists to create a climate of clinical enquiry through practice with regard to the delivery of care to service users with physical disabilities.
* 26. To liaise with the multi‑disciplinary team to identify areas of best practice that need to be researched and participate, where appropriate, in nursing and multidisciplinary research.
* 27. To ensure that current literature and research are available to all involved in the care of service users.
* 28. To lead, manage and monitor staffing teams via the management structure, ensuring recruitment, induction, training, supervision and appraisal are carried out in line with Shaftesbury policies and procedures.
* 29. To be responsible for personal development by undertaking relevant training, attending meetings, conferences and events, ensuring all matters relevant to the role are updated in the Personal Development Plan agreed with the manager.
* 30. To carry out additional duties and tasks that may be required within the range of responsibilities of the post.
* 31. To identify the areas where change is required or opportunities exist for improving treatment, care and support for service users.
* 32. To network with residents, families/carers, professional and managerial colleagues.
* 33. To support effective communication systems across all involved in the care of service users.
* 34. To collaborate on research to improve care delivery.
* 35. To learn and apply best practice.
* 36. To carry out any additional duties as required.
Working relationships include internal contacts with the Registered Manager, Deputy Manager and support workers, and external contacts with the National Health Service, Clinical Commissioning Group, and regulatory bodies such as the NMC and CQC.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Experience:
* Evidence of continued professional and personal development.
* GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.
* Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Nurse Mental Health (RNMH), or Registered Nurse Learning Disability.
* ENB 998 or other relevant training qualifications.
* At least 1 year of clinical experience within a care setting, including supporting and supervising staff.
* Ability to lead a team of staff.
* Experience working with people with physical disabilities.
* Computer skills: competent use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
* Good teaching, interpersonal, report‑writing and organisational skills.
* Outgoing personality, self‑managed travel.
Desirable Experience:
* Experience of working in a service for people with disabilities.
