In WMG, we are undertaking research into how traditional Li-ion battery cell design can be optimised through the application of systems engineering, component modelling and data science.
Creating new models and predictive tools to improve battery performance, lifetime and safety.
We are therefore seeking a Research Fellow to join our team.
Sun-trans is a new project commenced in October 2025 with various partners across the UK, Spain, Turkey, Romania, Italy and the Netherlands and more.
The project is funded by Horizon EU with an ambition to accelerate the adoption of PVs for Clean mobility.

We seek a postdoctoral researcher to develop a scalable, replicable methodology for designing PV-integrated EV charging stations that deliver peak shaving, valley filling, and frequency regulation while jointly optimising cost and CO2 savings.
The researcher will develop multi-objective optimisation algorithms to balance the energy flow between PV arrays, battery storage, EV charging demand and grid interfaces, considering the economic and environmental objectives.
They will lead the validation of the methodology’s performance using real data.
About You
You will need a PhD in a relevant discipline (could be Electrical/ Power/Energy Systems, Control Engineering, Renewable Systems Engineering), along with excellent computing and programming skills in multiple languages and environments.
You will also need a problem-solving ability to manage and analyse manufacturing datasets and the ability to publish high-quality academic outputs.
Familiarity with EV charging strategies (smart charging, V2G), battery degradation/ efficiency models, PV models, and uncertainty handling is required.
Project Specific Responsibilities
Build scalable and light end-to-end models of PV-BESS-EV-grid systems, including converters, network constraints, charger topologies, and operating conditions.
Design multi-objective formulations, perform constraint handling, and robust variants for routine and uncertain usage.
Implement control strategies to deliver peak shaving, valley filling, and fast frequency response.
Quantify replicability/ scalability and develop design rules across different sites and sizes.
Translate results into design guidelines and decision support: sizing rules, intelligent operation, and consumer strategies.
Principal Accountabilities
Lead/co-author journal papers, conference papers and project reports.
Work in a collaborative environment with project partners.
Prepare slides and present at project meetings and international venues.
