We are recruiting for an academic Lecturer position for a practicing artist working broadly in the field of painting. The role requires the successful candidate to work on site in the Slade studios.

Some teaching responsibilities will include tutorial responsibility for a group of students; studio and workshop teaching in one-to-one and group situations with students from all three studio subject areas, and participation in the lively programme of tutorials, seminars and group crits.

Alongside teaching responsibilities, the post holder will hold an enabling role.

Working Pattern:

This is a FTE role which equates to days per week, which will include Mondays and Tuesdays.

About you

Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge:

The successful candidate will be a practising artist dynamically engaged in the practices and discourses of contemporary painting, engaged in contemporary art debates and the wider cultural context. They will demonstrate an active engagement in debates concerning non-canonical approaches to art practice, the decolonisation of thought and art practice, and diversity within contemporary art. They should have an understanding of the relationship between studio practice and its interface with technical processes, such as specialist material knowledge within a field of Painting broadly defined.

They candidate must have a research profile with outputs of suitable quality for submission to the Research Excellent Framework (REF), and provide evidence of research and practice that questions canonical conventions of Fine Art and can inform innovative pedagogical and curriculum development. Examples may include research and practice that investigate or address experiences of race, gender identity, sexuality, cross-cultural and cross-regional interactions.

The candidate will have experience of teaching in Higher Education, showing a commitment to research-based teaching, and experience of inclusive teaching methods, such as safe space teaching

Skills and Abilities:

The candidate will have good oral and written communication skills and be approachable, flexible and possess the ability to relate to staff at all levels and respond to the needs of students with a wide range of abilities and backgrounds. They must work enthusiastically and confidently with students and colleagues, including group teaching and critiques, individual tutorials and hands-on practical workshops, encouraging curiosity, exploration and risk taking.
