As part of the Growth Mission, DBT’s Business Group strives to engage with and listen to businesses to shape Government policy and delivery more effectively; we help businesses to connect with domestic and international opportunities for growth, investment and export; and we help to increase economic resilience and mitigate economic shocks.
The Group is being refocused around the 8 priority sectors of the forthcoming Industrial Strategy as well as the foundational sectors of the economy. This role is a brilliant mix of strategic thinking, leading with and through people across the department and more widely, and some operational delivery.
This Director will lead on the Government’s ambitious agenda to transform engagement with business to support economic growth. This will include understanding business intelligence and sentiment across the whole economy as well as key sectors, developing strategic insights based on that, and advising Ministers on their own engagement with senior business leaders as well as leading on key ministerial events and visits. The Group’s briefing hub reports to the Director and the role also covers DBT’s response to economic shocks as well as DBT’s own emergency response team and its response on the Horizon and Covid Inquiries.
DBT’s Director Business Intelligence & Engagement is responsible for a wide range of activities focused on delivering economic growth. They include business engagement, business intelligence and organizing the department’s business events to connect government with business in order to deliver Ministerial priorities. Additional responsibilities include cross departmental sector collaboration and services, response to economic shocks, DBT's own emergency response team and two Inquiry teams.
Key responsibilities include:
* Leadership of the DBT’s Business Engagement Unit to deliver cross government perspectives on business relationships; delivering a plan of strategic Ministerial and Permanent Secretary engagement with business, working with private offices, Special Advisors, and teams across DBT and key stakeholders to deliver on government’s objectives and priorities.
* Responsible for business intelligence across government, which includes provision of timely and impactful information across business sectors (domestic and trade) to Ministers and senior officials.
* Leadership of Business Group strategy, responsible for developing a strategic framework across sectors (trade and domestic) to inform activity in other areas of DBT and across Government to drive economic growth.
* Advising Ministers and senior officials on the major policy issues that are impacting businesses
* SRO for delivery of the DBT Priority Events programme, which ranges from one-off ministerial receptions and business engagements, through Board of Trade events, to major set-pieces such as Investment Summits and the Business Connect programme.
* Responsibility for Contract Management of the department’s Events Delivery provider and the events booking platform; departmental SRO and responsible for propriety, usage, value for money and effective delivery under the contract itself.
* Leadership of Sectors Briefing Hub which is responsible for the correspondence and briefing for a considerable (over 1/3 in 2024) of the department’s business.
* Oversight of the Business Response Team, a flexible priority resource team, on behalf of the Director General and Business Group;
* Responsible for DBT’s Emergency Response Coordination and Operations work including responsibility for two CNI areas and developing an emergency response function for the department, and the Economic Shocks function which works with sector and local teams to respond to companies in distress;
* Responsible for leading the Department’s contributions to the Covid Inquiry and Horizon Inquiry
