Job Overview

Fal Ward is a clinical day case unit looking for an experienced Oncology nurse trained in chemotherapy to help coordinate the day‑to‑day running of the unit. Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, and to NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon with relevant experience.

Coordinate day‑to‑day running of the day unit and/or Oncology O/P, provide education and leadership for junior staff. Clinical roles include venepuncture, cannulation, CVAD use, blood transfusions, chemotherapy and immunotherapy and other supportive treatments. Support new patients with correct information, signposting and safety netting advice. Understand blood parameters and make decisions according to protocol and patient presentation. Support the senior sister in managerial duties of running a day case unit and Oncology O/P.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

* Provide clinical and managerial leadership across oncology areas, including inpatients, day case, and outpatients, in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Manager.
* Establish systems for multidisciplinary, patient‑centred care, demonstrating good interpersonal, teaching and practical skills.
* Advise and support patients and carers on treatment side effects, neutropenic sepsis, hair loss and other effects.
* Practice advanced specialist skills: administration of Cytotoxic & Immunotherapies treatments, blood products, central venous and peripheral access device care, venepuncture and cannulation.
* Assess patients prior to treatment and determine whether alterations to planned care are needed, referring as appropriate.
* Assess supportive, palliative and psychological needs of patients and carers and refer to appropriate professionals.
* In nurse‑led clinics, assess patients' suitability for initial referral and treatment at each attendance.
* Work in collaboration with colleagues to ensure patients have timely, high‑quality information and be active in delivering this information.
* Plan, implement, carry out and evaluate care given by self and other nursing staff to patients and their relatives.
* Maintain accurate clinical observations and records, interpret significance and implement appropriate care.
* Make decisions regarding clinical intervention based on analysis and interpretation of complex clinical facts in crisis situations.
* Maintain own clinical expertise and competence by working a minimum of 80% of the week clinically, undergoing training, external or internal courses, and keeping up to date with practice changes.
* Act as a clinical resource, providing advice, support and supervision to unit staff and health‑care professionals regarding specialist patient management.
* Be visible and accessible to patients, visitors and users of the service, proactively promoting the role and responsibilities of the unit Senior Sister.

Knowledge & Experience


Essential criteria

* Delivery of SACT.
* Coordination on a daily basis of the clinical and educational requirements as defined by the Clinical Nurse Manager within area of responsibility.


Desirable criteria

* Demonstrable experience of managing complaints and undertaking conflict resolution.
* Ability to apply research findings and support proven evidence‑based practice.
* Demonstrable experience of research process.


Qualifications


Essential criteria

* First level NMC registered Nurse Specialist clinical proven knowledge across a range of work procedures including SACT administration, underpinned by theory and CPD.
* UKONS passport and in‑house SACT training completed.


Desirable criteria

* Demonstrable experience of leading clinical teams.
* Teaching/Mentoring/Assessing Course and/or qualification.
* A degree level post‑registration qualification or equivalent in Oncology.
