Senior Speech and Language Therapist in Mental Health Rehabilitation

The successful candidate will work predominantly with adults who have acquired and progressive neurological conditions. The role will involve providing specialist assessment and therapy to adult patients who have been referred to the Doncaster Community Stroke Rehabilitation Team, the Neurological Rehabilitation Outreach Team and general community caseloads (including care homes). We also receive referrals from the physical and mental health inpatient wards.
The successful candidate will be able to work both independently and as part of a wider team. The post will involve working in a variety of settings including patients own homes, care homes, inpatient wards and outpatient clinic. The successful candidates must be competent in the assessment and management of dysphagia or working towards completion of a recognised post graduate qualification/competencies.

Main duties of the job
* To provide specialist support to adult patients/service users including support with alternative and augmentative communication aids. .
* To ensure well co-ordinated, integrated care plan for individual patients/service users.
* To participate fully in the multidisciplinary teams drawing on specialist knowledge/experience.
* To contribute to service and policy development.
* To advise line manager on service delivery, pressures and developments with regard to future needs and anticipated developments.
* To supervise and delegate work and provide clinical support to a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant, Junior Speech and Language therapists and generic Rehabilitation Assistants.
* To represent speech and language therapy at relevant meetings as and when required.
* To attend and contribute to departmental team meetings and AHP network meetings.
* Knowledge of AAC systems would be beneficial.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Professional specific degree i.e. BSC (Bachelor of Science) speech sciences or Masters in medical sciences.
* Certificate to practice.
* Post basic training in dysphagia assessment and management
* Member of the Royal college of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
* Member of the Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC). Recognised formal training in courses specific for specialism
* Recognised qualification in counselling.
* Up to date training in alternative and augmentative communication
Experience
* Experience working with stroke patients, neuro-degenerative conditions and head injury. Experience in the use and assessment of Alternative and Augmentative communication (AAC).
* High level expertise in the assessment, treatment and management of adults with acquired communication disorders.
* Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team.
* Good Information Technology (IT) knowledge and skills, including use of Microsoft Office software.
* High level of expertise in interpretation of cognitive neuropsychology including PALPA (Psychinguistic Assessments of Language Processing in Aphasia) model.
* Experience of making complex ethical decisions within a multidisciplinary team setting
* Ability to liaise and interact well with other professionals.
* Detailed knowledge of a range of electronic communication aids (systems).
* Experience in training speech and language therapy students and/or supervising rehabilitation assistants or support staff
