Overview
Wirral Council is seeking a compassionate, proactive, and highly skilled Homeless Prevention & Assessment Officer to join our Supported Housing & Homelessness team. This is a vital role supporting vulnerable individuals and families to access safe, sustainable housing and prevent homelessness through tailored interventions and collaborative working.
Responsibilities
* Deliver timely housing advice and support in line with the Housing Act 1996, Homelessness Act 2002, and Children’s Act 1989.
* Identify risks of homelessness and implement preventative strategies.
* Liaise with internal departments and external partners (e.g. health services, landlords, probation, support providers) to secure appropriate accommodation.
* Support clients with complex needs including domestic violence, mental health, addiction, and safeguarding concerns.
* Arrange emergency and temporary accommodation with clear move-on plans.
* Conduct home visits and housing surgeries across the borough.
* Prepare court documentation and represent clients in housing-related hearings.
* Manage Discretionary Housing Payments and negotiate with creditors to reduce arrears.
* Maintain accurate records and ensure data protection compliance.
Essential Experience & Skills
* Proven experience in homelessness prevention and housing advice.
* Skilled in interviewing, negotiation, and working with vulnerable client groups.
* Strong understanding of housing legislation and safeguarding protocols.
* Ability to manage complex cases with empathy and assertiveness.
* Confident in IT systems and report writing.
Desirable
* Knowledge of welfare reforms, court processes, and tenancy law.
* Experience supporting clients with domestic violence, mental health, or addiction issues.
* Commitment to continuous professional development.
