Job overview

This position will be based at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation (UHSNFT), which includes the St Richards Hospital at Chichester, Royal Sussex County Hospital at Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital at Haywards Heath. The main site for this role will be SRH but the post-holder will also work across-sites at the direction of the Deputy Head or Head of Microbiology & Infection. Close working with the sites at Brighton and Haywards Heath will be required.In conjunction with the Head ofMicrobiology & Infection and Deputy Head of Microbiology & Infection to maintain and develop laboratory operational services in line with Departmental, Divisional and Trust objectives. As a Lead BMS the post-holder will manage all aspects of the section for which they are responsible. In addition the post holder supervises and undertakes a range of complex investigations using a variety of techniques, including manual, semi-automated and automated techniques on highly specialised analysers to assist in the diagnosis of disease, and monitoring of treatment.The post-holder will work as a specialist lead and manager for a team of Biomedical Scientists and support staff, to provide an efficient, cost-effective and timely clinical service for patients.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day operational management of sections of the service & will contribute to planning & implementation of the future plans for the service for both the merged Trust & the wider Sussex Pathology Network. Collaborate with other staff to ensure adequate staffing levels throughout the service, arranges medium/long term staff rotation in collaboration with training officer. Plans work in the department, prioritising work according to staff resource ensuring surge capacity is appropriately targeted. Brings staffing resource issues to the attention of the Deputy Head of Microbiology & Infection. Lead the development of the department by reviewing current & future clinical needs & introducing additional services/novel techniques where a significant clinical improvement is perceived &appropriate resources are available. Manages clinical trials, procedures & developments e.g. drug trials, equipment trials, assay evaluations. Carries out comparative assessment of methodologies & advises Head of Microbiology & Infection and Deputy. Agrees the departmental objectives with Head of Microbiology & Infection and Deputy. Negotiates implementation ofobjectives with departmental staff. Assists in defining research projects and collating results. Ensures that projects comply with quality management system requirements.Participates in multi-agency research projects and may present data at National/International Scientific Conferences/Forums.

Professional Registration

* Registered biomedical scientist HCPC

Experience/Qualifications

* Educated to masters level or equivalent level of experience working at a senior (band 7) level in NHS Pathology. Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development. Evidence of leading and managing change in a complex environment. Has worked at a senior level in an acute NHS hospital. Ability to translate complex systems, user requirements and corporate priorities into robust implementation plans. Significant experience in working with confidential information and adherence with Caldicott (patient confidentiality), GDPR 2018.
* Recognised professional post graduate qualification in leadership and management or equivalent experience or training plus further specialist knowledge or experience to master’s level or equivalent. Understanding of the complex strategic environment and of the commissioning agenda.

Skills

* To be a part of, supervise and direct a team. Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills. Can present complex and sensitive information to large groups of staff at all levels (Trust level to Junior staff) including training and conference presentations.
