An exciting opportunity exists to provide Automation Engineering support to a fast-paced R&D environment, taking ownership of control system solutions during the development and operation of new and existing R&D assets across Johnson Matthey’s Teesside sites (predominantly Billingham site).
You will also provide Software and Controls guidance for internally delivered projects, which could involve modifications and upgrades to existing legacy systems or entirely new installations. Your main focus will be on software tasks such as scoping automation improvements, offline builds, fault finding, testing code, and implementing changes to the controls infrastructure based on management change requests.
Johnson Matthey, a FTSE 250 organisation, is a global leader in sustainable technologies, specializing in catalysis, precious metal products, chemicals, and process technology. With operations in over 30 countries and more than 12,600 employees, we have a rich history of over 200 years. Join us to be part of our growth journey and help us maintain our reputation as a leading organization in our field. Our culture and people are our competitive advantage, ensuring our continued success.
Your responsibilities:
As an Automation Engineer within a dynamic site improvement team, you will design, install, manage, and maintain software on Allen Bradley and Siemens PLC and DCS systems. You should be capable of fault finding, modifying, and programming Allen Bradley PLC solutions. Knowledge of PCS7 or Emerson DeltaV is a plus.
You will identify design solutions for complex legacy automation systems and work on improving the reliability of bespoke research engineering equipment. Supporting project proposals and business cases, developing automation skills, and maintaining strong relationships with peers and the research community are also part of your role.
Provide expert knowledge of SCADA systems, including RSLogix 5000 and InTouch, and experience with industrial communication protocols like Modbus and Profibus is desirable.
Assist project teams from initial design stages, advising on software and control equipment selection, and ensuring plant reliability and maintainability. Implement standards for alarm management and safety-related controls, including a basic understanding of ESD systems and process safety code implementation.
Have a good understanding of all levels of automation based on the Purdue Model, some exposure to cybersecurity standards like IEC 62443, and networking skills would be beneficial.
Requirements for the role:
Hold a formal IT/Electronic/Controls qualification such as a Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent recognized training.
Skills in PLC programming (Siemens, Allen Bradley), SCADA, and preferably experience with InTouch and RSLogix 5000.
Experience in a manufacturing or chemical plant environment with controls/software functions.
Knowledge of network infrastructure and the ability to read electrical and instrumentation drawings.
Flexible and adaptable attitude to quickly deliver onsite solutions.
How you will be rewarded:
Competitive compensation and benefits package including bonus, pension contributions, and 25 days annual leave (varies for shift roles).
At JM, we foster an inclusive culture where everyone can bring their full self to work and thrive. We value diversity and believe that different perspectives drive innovation and success.
