Role: Technician – Electrical Installations

Location: Bedford College – Cauldwell Street Campus

Salary/Benefits: Salary is between £23,557 and £26,754 per annum DOE and Qualifications, 27 days annual leave plus Bank holidays, People’s Pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses.

Hours/Weeks: 37 hours per week – 52 weeks per year

Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

About the role:

We are currently seeking a Technician in Electrical Installations to join our Construction department at The Bedford College Group.

As a Technician, you play an important role in the success of our students through:

1. Workshop Support & Student Assistance – Provide practical support to lecturers and trainers, primarily in Electrical Installations but also across wider Construction workshops, helping learners progress and addressing behaviour in line with College procedures.
2. Equipment Maintenance & Stock Control – Service and repair tools and equipment, maintain consumables, manage ordering and stock levels, perform annual inventories, and ensure accurate sign‑in/out systems for materials and equipment.
3. Health, Safety & Workshop Standards – Maintain safe, clean workshop environments; complete risk and COSHH assessments; ensure compliance with all safety rules; and contribute to site security in collaboration with the Head of Construction.
4. Resource Preparation & Technical Support – Prepare work areas, manufacture teaching aids and templates, replace damaged parts, and ensure all equipment is ready and suitable for use on courses.
5. College‑Wide Duties & Compliance– Support marketing and engagement events, uphold safeguarding, EDI and H&S responsibilities, participate in required training, and undertake additional duties as assigned by the Head of Construction.

About you:

6. Qualifications & Trade Expertise – Level 2 NVQ/Diploma in a construction trade, GCSE‑level English and Maths (or willingness to achieve), willingness to gain First Aid certification, plus experience working within the electrical industry and knowledge of safe electrical practices.
7. Construction Knowledge & Technical Skills – Understanding of wider construction trades, ability to maintain stock inventories, prepare and repair equipment and hand tools, and consistently support high‑quality learning experiences for students.
8. Professionalism, Values & Team Contribution – Demonstrated high performance, strong alignment with organisational values (Student Focus, High Performance, Respect, Openness, Honesty), and ability to work professionally while contributing positively to the team.
9. Communication, Independence & Inclusivity – Effective communication skills across face‑to‑face, phone and written formats; self‑motivation with minimal supervision; experience working with diverse groups; and understanding of how to promote equality and diversity.
10. Safeguarding, Flexibility & Health & Safety – Commitment to safeguarding and maintaining appropriate boundaries with young people, willingness to update skills, flexible working across sites, and strong awareness of health and safety requirements.
